Date & Time
Wednesday, 23 May 2018
- 12:00 pm
NOTE: This webinar was presented live on 23 may 2018. Register to view the recording, as listed below.
This webinar provides an insight into the ability for the spatial and surveying sciences to explore and discover Earth’s secrets, today and in our distant past. It is the first event in the ‘Captain Planet’ themed series that is aiming to encourage early career professionals in the spatial and surveying sciences to get exposure to the way the discipline is saving the planet.
Speaker 1: Thomas Searles
Registered Surveyor, AAM
Unravelling the mystery of all ages.
Civilisations have risen to power and crumbled into history innumerable times in our ancient past. Spatial science has led a resurgence of discovery in multiple areas across almost every inhabited surface of the planet.
Satellite imagery, drone technologies and advances in mathematical terrain modelling have found hundreds of lost cities and dozens of entire civilisations in the past decade. The wisdom of these collapsed cultures is often forever lost in the dust, however their knowledge of construction, math and astronomy is often carved in stone.
Spatial science has a truly unique skill set that can be applied to not only the discovery of ancient civilisations, but help unravel the greatest mysteries of man-kinds ancient past.
Speaker 2: Dr Simit Raval
Co-Director, Laboratory for Imaging of the Mining Environment (LIME)
Deputy Director – Undergraduate Studies, UNSW Mining Engineering
Smart Sensing Technology for Environmental and Safety Monitoring
This presentation provides an overview of advanced sensing systems to monitor various environmental and safety aspects of mining operations. Few examples are highlighted utilising multispectral, hyperspectral, thermal, LiDAR and RADAR sensors with the associated capabilities and challenges. The examples include sensors mounted on satellites, aircrafts and more recently unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)/drones.
