eCPD - GIS for Surveyors Webinar Series - Part 1: Where do I Start? GIS Basics

The Series

We were pleased to present a six part series of webinars with a focus on providing background information, hints and tips and more on using GIS in surveying. The series was hosted by some of our wonderful NSW Committee members but is open to professionals from across Australia! The event topics were:

  • Where do I Start? GIS Basics (this session)
  • Where to find open data? How to use it?
  • Converting to/from GIS and CAD
  • Data exchange
  • Geospatial data management and automation
  • What does the future hold?

Session One

Before talking about digital twins, data automation or data management we have to build a good foundation - similar to how a house needs preparation before the first stone is laid.

This first session in the series gave a short introduction about some of the GIS software packages, both free and paid (ESRI, MapInfo, QGIS, CadCorp) and which would be most useful for your individual purposes. Our speaker, Hanno Klahn, also gave some fundamental rules for creating data in one of these packages, different GIS data types (points, lines and polygons) and what makes a picture into a proper map (cartographic principles like legend, disclaimer, projection, etc.) depending on its purpose (hard copy or digital).
