This is a recording of a live webinar held on 11 August 2021
This was the first in our underwater mapping webinar series. Our speaker was Dr Iain Parnum, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Marine Science and Technology, School of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Curtin University.
Dr Parnum presented on the scientific applications of SONAR mapping systems.
There are many motivations for mapping of the marine environment with SONAR systems, the focus of this talk is to highlight some of the scientific applications. The talk began with a brief refresher on the principles of active SONAR operation. It was followed by case studies using bathymetry, seafloor and water column backscatter data to better understand the marine environment. Some of the research being out carried in this area by Curtin Students was also highlighted. The talk concluded with an update of the national seabed mapping coordination program AusSeabed.
