eCPD - Celebrating Local NSW Surveyors: Cadastral Webinar

Date & Time

Friday, 23 Sep 2022
3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This is a recording of a webinar held on 23 March 2021.

The path to Global Surveyors’ Day began back in ancient Egypt when society first used surveying techniques to divide land. Throughout history, surveyors have remained the pioneers of discovery shaping our world to its current existence by exploring the unknown on earth and in space. Fast forward to 2013 when the signing of the Budapest declaration created a common worldwide celebration for those leaders, past and present. We are proud to proclaim Global Surveyors’ Day as a way to globally recognise the ground-breakers, pioneers, individuals and the industry that has shaped our history and continues to be the foundation of our communities.

As such SSSI NSW celebrated Global Surveyors' Day 2021 with an Online Cadastral Seminar bringing together discussions of the preservation of survey infrastructure and three cadastral presentations from the NSW Bushfire Recovery to urban and rural case studies.

Speakers
Vittorio Sussanna | Manager POSI, NSW Spatial Services | LinkedIn

Vittorio will provide an overview of the NSW Government program for the preservation of survey infrastructure (POSI), the collaborations going on across government and industry as well as an update on the results from a recent industry survey on POSI. This is a great chance to improve your own background knowledge and ask any questions – it is time we had broader discussions about how we can improve and support this program across industry.

Peter Howie | Registered Surveyor NSW & WA, ICD Asia Pacific Consulting Surveyors | LinkedIn

Peter will provide a detailed cadastral case study of the disaster recovery approach established on the back of his experience with the 2019 summer fires. The survey was able to engage the adversely affected land owners by getting their minds off the bushfire destruction that surrounded them (if only temporarily) and re-connecting with their land. It provided material and physical help to assist their recovery.

Peter’s project was based in Skyline Road, Mt Tomah in the NSW Blue Mountains approximately 1.5 hours north west of Sydney. The northern end of Skyline Drive was burnt by an extremely hot fire which completely destroyed 7 homes and damaged many others. Approximately four weeks after the bushfires ceased Peter voluntarily set out to find and protect subsurface survey reference marks but soon found this project brought much bigger rewards than expected.

This project is really exciting and can easily be repeated by any surveyor at any time in a number of different emergency/disaster management scenarios. It filled a void between the event and visits by the insurance assessors / tree loppers / demolishing crews while promoting many of the benefits and values of surveying.

John Minehan | Registered Surveyor NSW | LinkedIn

John commenced practice as a self-employed Land and Engineering Surveyor in 1977. Some 44 years later John’s surveying practice continues to offer surveying services at all levels to the general public and to local government utilities. Mentoring and introducing young people to the exciting and fulfilling surveying profession is a speciality of John’s practice.

John’s presentation will be on the Creation of Easements by the Registration of a Deposited Plan and the associated 88B instrument and also by Transfer and Grant. Some basic principles, rules and plenty of case studies and examples will contrast the two distinct methods of Easement creation.

Justin Kell | Registered Surveyor NSW | LinkedIn

Justin has been a Registered Surveyor for 20 years in Goulburn NSW and a second-generation surveyor following in his father’s Russell’s footsteps. His office has been operating from the same location for 60 years. Justin will give a presentation on the role he plays in his community at a professional level with a particular focus on rural surveying case studies. As Justin’s region is amongst many in regional NSW going through unprecedented growth, he will touch on the challenges these opportunities also bring.
