This is a recording of a live webinar held on 23 September 2021
This was the third instalment in our underwater mapping webinar series. Our speaker was Dr Gottfried Mandlburger, Senior Researcher at Vienna University of Technology.
In general, Unoccupied Aerial Vehicles (UAV) play an increasingly important role in the mapping sector. This also applies to underwater areas, where both image based stereo-photogrammetry via Structure-from-Motion and Dense Image Matching and laser scanning can be employed to obtain shallow water bathymetry. Potential applications include mapping of coastal and inland water areas including rivers. Due to the low mobilization costs and the agility of the flying platform, UAV-bourne bathymetry is well suited for monitoring coastal and fluvial erosion in high spatial and temporal resolution.
The webinar introduces the basics of multimedia photogrammetry and laser bathymetry with a focus on the specific properties of UAV-borne data acquisition. Corrections of the raw measurements due to refraction of the image and laser rays at the water surface constitute the main task in processing bathymetric image and laser datasets. The basic principles of refraction correction are explained in theory and practice.
Concrete UAV-image data of a coastal area around Perth, Australia, and UAV-LiDAR data of a pre-Alpine gravel-bed river in Austria serve as basis for demonstrating the workflow from the raw measurements to the final 3D model of the submerged topography using the scientific laser scanning and point cloud software OPALS (Orientation and Processing of Airborne Laser Scanning data).
