The geospatial industry is dogged by its inability to express the value proposition of what we offer. This is in no small part due to the fact that information (the main commodity we produce) is often viewed as an intangible asset on the balance sheet of the organisations we work for and therefore difficult to value in accountancy terms. Value chain mapping is a technique which analyses the supply chain for a product or service and assigns monetary or socio-economic benefits to each step in the chain. Applying value chain mapping helps to identify the highest value changes that geospatial can contribute but also helps organisations identify processes that add little or no value.
This presentation will illustrate how this has been applied to geospatial projects using work undertaken on establishing the business case for 3D Geo-information in Europe applied to a number of use cases including valuation, urban planning, flood control and security.
