This is a recording of a live webinar held on 3 August 2021
We are proud to present this recorded webinar series highlighting some of the outstanding NSW winners of the 2020 Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards, a program run by SSSI & SIBA|GITA to celebrate the outstanding work of individuals and organisations in the surveying and spatial field. Over the past few months, we have heard about the challenges and successes of three of the NSW based winning teams.
The third and final presentation was from the winners of the Award for Technical Excellence, UNSW and Geoplex, on their project Gold Coast Beach Management System. The presentation was given by Brittany Dahl from Geoplex and Chris Drummond from UNSW.
Each year it is estimated that the beaches of the Gold Coast have over 40 million visits from locals and over 7 million visits from tourists. The combined tourism and surfing industries are worth an estimated $7.5 billion annually to the Gold Coast’s economy, with this economic value underpinned by the City’s beaches. Active management of the beaches and coastal infrastructure against the increasing risks posed by storms, coastal erosion and climate change is therefore a very high priority for the Council of the City of Gold Coast. Council required a comprehensive, data-driven management system to support their decision making and monitor management strategies.
The Gold Coast Beach Monitoring and Management System is a truly integrated, multi-dimensional platform developed for the management of coastal areas. Managed by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Water Research Laboratory, and developed in partnership with Geoplex, the system brings together a network of geospatially calibrated machine vision cameras, advanced image analysis methods and an online dashboard, all integrated to provide a near-real time beach monitoring and management platform. As a collective, the overall platform is the most sophisticated and large-scale coastal monitoring system in the world, serving up geo-referenced imagery of the beaches and other geospatial data sets that directly assist Council officers and other stakeholders to manage the beaches of the Gold Coast, and indirectly benefit the broader community and tourism industry through improved beach amenity.
