eCPD - Georeferencing techniques in drone-based photogrammetry and laser scanning

Unmanned aerial systems (UAS), aka drones, have recently been applied in various domains of natural sciences and engineering. Most of these applications require geospatial information about the environment. Consequently, three-dimensional (3D) mapping via UAS has become a matter of growing interest among both researchers and industries. Solutions developed for this purpose are usually equipped with various types of cameras and, more recently, with laser scanners. In most mapping missions, the goal is to generate topographic data that are represented accurately in a global or a local spatial reference system or coordinate reference system (CRS). In these cases, it is said that the data (images or laser scans) must be georeferenced in that CRS.
In this webinar, first, a quick introduction to GNSS-aided inertial navigation systems will be provided. Then, photogrammetric alternatives for georeferencing drone imagery will be reviewed. These include indirect georeferencing using ground control points or other information associated with the object space, direct georeferencing using inertial navigation systems, and integrated sensor orientation. The advantages and disadvantages of each method will be discussed. Next, the geometry of a drone-borne laser scanning system will be presented, and the methods for georeferencing and co-registering laser scans will be discussed. Finally, a few examples of how drone-based imaging and scanning can be applied to solving real-world problems will be introduced.
