Young Professionals

Date & Time

Wednesday, 16 Mar 2022
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This is a recording of a webinar held on Tuesday 16 March 2021.

Thinking what is next after university? Join us for the SSSI Young Professionals “Life After University” webinar to hear from professionals on their insights, experience, tips and important lessons learnt along the way.

We had a stellar line-up of past APSEA & NZSEA Young Professional of the Year Award recipients who shared their invaluable experience and career paths with you.

This session is ideal for students and young professionals who are navigating their next steps.

Speakers

Claire Buxton

Claire is a giver, a motivator, and the ambitious leader of the Volunteer Community Surveyor Program.

Since she was an undergrad at Otago University, Claire has always sought opportunities to give her skills toward a purpose beyond herself. Through volunteering her time to various industry groups, and now in guiding the dedicated VCSP team to scale up the Program, Claire hopes that young surveyors like herself can get a foot in the door of humanitarian and environmental surveying.

Outside of volunteering, Claire also works full-time in Vancouver, Canada at Underhill Geomatics. She is proud to be a Licensed Cadastral Surveyor in New Zealand and continually seeks further education in land-related challenges.

Claire was the People’s Choice, the Young Professional of the Year, and a finalist for the Women’s Leadership Award at the 2018 NZSEAs. Find Claire on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and on the FIG YSN YouTube channel presenting on various VCSP activities.

Dale Atkinson

Dale Atkinson graduated from UTAS (B.Geomatics with honours) in Hobart 2007. He now owns and operates a survey practice in Townsville North Queensland and is currently a director of the SSSI Board. Dale won the Queensland Young Professional of the Year APSEA in 2017. Check out Dale's full profile on LinkedIn.

Tom Spencer

Tom leads on the development of new, and the growth of existing data products at Geoscape Australia. Passionate about creating innovative spatial data products to solve Australia wide challenges Tom is inspired through collaborating across the spatial industry to push the boundaries of what’s possible at scale. Tom was instrumental in the creation of Geoscape’s Australia wide Buildings dataset, which was recognised through the award of the ACT Young Spatial Professional of the Year in 2017. A graduate of the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne with a BSc (Hons) in Geographic Information Science Tom started his career in the UK before following a consulting opportunity to Australia. Settling in Australia and starting a family Tom spends his weekends constructing zoos, dinosaur lands, and controlling zoo keepers that inevitably are eaten by a tiger, raptor, or meerkat.  Find out more on Tom on LinkedIn.
