ANZ Launch of the Locus Charter

Date & Time

Wednesday, 28 Apr 2021
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm AEST

The Locus Charter is based on a broad international collaboration of governments, organizations and individual practitioners seeking to ensure the ethical & responsible use of location data throughout the world.

Since 2019, the Benchmark Initiative and EthicalGEO initiatives have supported international dialogues with geospatial professionals and organizations, to explore what it means to use location data responsibly in different contexts. These dialogues have strongly suggested that common international principles could help users of geospatial data make more informed decisions, and provide the basis for communication with people affected by those decisions. The Locus Charter has been developed through international workshops, and forms the basis for further collaboration. Click here to view the document.

Join us for the Australian & New Zealand Launch of the Charter and to find out more about how to get involved. Writing the document is one thing, building a community around it so that it can become a living part of how we operate as a profession and an industry is the next evolution.

Program
Presenting the Locus Charter

Denise McKenzie & Ben Hawes – Co-Directors, Benchmark Initiative
The Locus Charter proposes that wider, shared understanding of risks and solutions relating to uses of location data can improve standards of practice, and help protect individuals and the public interest. We hope the Charter can improve understanding of risk, so those can be managed, and the many benefits of geospatial technologies can be realised for individuals and societies.
