Webinar: Mapping Shallow Coral Reefs Globally, A Remote Sensing Spatial Sciences Journey
Date & Time
Thursday, 25 Nov 2021
- 6:00 pm
This is the sixth instalment in our popular underwater mapping webinar series. Our speaker for this webinar is Dr Chris Roelfsema from UQ.
Chris will be outlining large coral reef system mapping efforts from the Great Barrier Reef to all +231000 reefs globally through the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, 3D GBR mapping and The Allen Coral Atlas projects.
Creating highest spatial and thematic detail freely accessible map of reef globally by integrating, milj. of satelite imagery, +450 global field data sets, 500k photo quadrat, physical attribute (depth from satellites, slope and waves) and global classification scheme, through machine learning and object based analysis cleanup. Bringing together coral reef ecology, earth observation science, expert knowledge, visual surveys, underwater cameras, GPS's, ARCPRO, ARC online, eCognition, scripting and Google Earth Engine.
Dr. Chris Roelfsema is a Senior Research Fellow at The University of Queensland with 20 years of experience in integrating field data, citizen science, physical attributes (e.g. depth, waves) and earth observation science to map and monitor coral reef and seagrass habitats. He leads a team of coral and seagrass ecologists and earth observation specialists developing applied habitat mapping and monitoring approaches. He is principal investigator for the development and implementation of the following projects:
1) 3D Great Barrier Reef Habitat Mapping project through GBRMPA
2) The verification and mapping component of the Allen Coral Atlas
3) Field Photoquadrat Collection and Machine Learning
4) Long term monitoring of coral reefs and seagrass habitats
5) Coral Reef Citizen Science.
