Date & Time

12:00 pm
- 5:30 pm
AEDT

SSSI NSW & WA are pleased to announce we are joining together to hold a half day online conference on the application of geospatial for climate change and disaster management (CCDM). This is being held on the afternoon of Monday 30 November via Zoom and will focus on case studies, technologies and interactive engagement.
The event is being held as part of a five day conference series on the theme of Climate Change and Disaster Management :Technology and Resilience in a Troubled World on 30 November - 4 December 2020. Click here to find out more about all the events for the week. Join for other days such as Tutorial Tuesday or see academic research on related subjects Wednesday through Friday.
Across the world, nature-triggered disasters fuelled by climate change are worsening. Some two billion people have been affected by the consequences of natural hazards over the last ten years, 95% of which were weather-related (such as floods and windstorms). Over the last summer in Australia, bushfires have caused unprecedented destruction to lives, wildlife and property. Floods have since ravaged many of these same communities.
SSSI held a successful online mapping challenge in February 2020 to capture thousands of buildings and other structures in burn out areas across Australia from high resolution imagery, which has been used by authorities for management assessment.
Good cooperation and coordination of crisis response operations are of critical importance to react rapidly and adequately to any crisis situation, while post-disaster recovery presents opportunities to build resilience towards reducing the scale of the next disaster.
SSSI NSW & WA's online conference will feature keynote speakers who are leaders in the industry will set the scene for the current climate change science. Presenters will give a geospatial perspective on monitoring and analysis of climate change and disaster related events. There will be an intergenerational networking event during the afternoon, as well as a series of lightning talks from some of the industry’s best and brightest research talent.
