Webinar: Spatial Challenges for Cooperative Vehicles
Date & Time

- 1:00 pm
We are pleased to announce our Qld Conference Highlights Webinar Series, showcasing some of the most popular presentations from our 2019 Qld Surveying & Spatial Day, Central Group and Northern Group Conferences.
The fourth webinar in the series is a presentation from Justin White on the Cooperative and Automated Vehicle Initiative (CAVI).
DTMR's CAVI is designed to prepare the department for vehicles with cooperative and automated capabilities on their road network. This includes testing and trialling cooperative intelligent transport systems technologies (that is, vehicles that ‘talk’ to other vehicles, infrastructure and road operations systems) and a cooperative and highly automated vehicle (that is, one that can operate in automated mode under certain conditions).
The first of four major components of CAVI to be completed will be the Ipswich Connected Vehicle Pilot. This Pilot will see around 500 vehicles retrofitted with C-ITS technologies, along with signalised intersections and key arterial roads and motorways.
The Pilot will allow vehicles, infrastructure, road operations systems, and cloud-based data sharing systems to ‘talk’ to each other in real-time to generate safety-related warnings and messages to the driver. Several use-cases will be tested including emergency electronic brake light warning, stopped or slow vehicle warnings, turning warnings for bicycle riders and pedestrians, red light warning, road works warning, in-vehicle speed warning, back-of-queue warning on motorways, and hazard warnings.
The spatial requirements for the pilot are significant and unusual, however they also
represent part of what will become the new normal for transport authorities. This
presentation will provide an overview of CAVI and specifically the Ipswich Connected
Vehicle Pilot, the challenges faced in relation to positioning and spatial data, the solutions adopted, and future developments that will help solve these problems.
Justin has always been a spatial specialist. It started with drawing mud maps in the dirt, drawing maps to go with his stories at school, and memorising countries, maps and
capitals. He has since gone on to roles in all levels of government and in private industry, getting to contribute to many great initiatives. These include natural and man-made risk modelling, emergency response data management, 3D modelling and visualisation, delivery of a national emergency alert system and development of the emergency vehicle priority system. Justin works at TMR in the Geospatial Technologies
group, working across the CAVI and Geospatial Strategy and Capability teams. He is currently enjoying the twin challenges of ensuring cooperative and automated vehicles involved in the initiative are accurately located and using data that is fit for purpose, while also positioning TMR to take advantage of advances in spatial capability and associated technology advances.
