APSEA-NSW 2020 Winners Webinar Series: Crown Lands Survey Team

Date & Time

Wednesday, 16 Jun 2021
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm AEST

We are proud to present a webinar series highlighting some of the outstanding NSW winners of the 2020 Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards, a program run by SSSI & SIBA|GITA to celebrate the outstanding work of individuals and organisations in the surveying and spatial field. Over the coming months, you will hear about the challenges and successes of three of the NSW based winning teams.

The first presentation is from the winners of the Award for Spatial Enablement, NSW DPIE Crown Lands team on their project "Cadastral Sensing" - Aboriginal Land Claim 3286.

Cadastral or boundary surveys are generally not associated with cutting edge technologies, photogrammetry, Lidar, point clouds, or data logging. This survey undertaken by NSW Government Department of Planning, Industry and Environment - Crown Lands Nowra office breaks that mould.

Utilising an array of sensing methods for both data capture and the use of acquired spatial data for verification, planning and safety purposes was crucial in the execution of this project. From alerts for bushfires to 50m cliffs to photogrammetry by RPAS (drone), significant challenges were overcome by incorporating a gamut of sensing and measurement technologies and techniques enabling Crown Lands Survey Team Nowra to undertake this large survey in an accurate, safe and efficient manner.

Aboriginal land claim 3286 is unique for many reasons however the rugged natural beauty of the 172-hectare site on the northern headland of Jervis Bay near the sleepy coastal town of Currarong both sets it aside from your usual cadastral project. The project encompassed;

* 1.5 kilometres of 50m high vertical cliff frontage to the South Pacific Ocean,
* 2.1 kilometres of tidal rivers and creek frontages,
* 700m of a non-tidal creek and
* an Island within Jervis Bay.

The surveying of an Island is unique in itself, however the difficulties involved in the cadastral surveying of the listed natural features provided significant challenges.
