Locate is the national surveying and spatial conference, held in April each across the country. It is jointly hosted by SSSI and our sister organisation, SIBA|GITA.
Each year, the conference attracts national and international delegates and as Australia’s premier spatial conference provides attendees with an unprecedented opportunity to learn about the latest trends and applications in geospatial technologies and harness the power of location.
The Oceanic Finals of the Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards are also held during Locate.
Locate returns in the traditional format of a live event at the National Convention Centre Canberra (NCCC) on 24 - 26 May 2022.
This year Locate22 will incorporate dedicated streams into the format of the conference. This will enable focused discussion from across industry sectors on how location technologies and practices are being used, highlighting the fundamental role they play in shaping Australia’s future.
Industry, government, non-profit and academics are demanding new opportunities for innovation, efficiency and improved responsiveness, particularly in location-based information. In the past year alone, we’ve seen how location information can provide societal, environmental and economic benefits to our communities. Recent national emergencies such as bushfires, drought, floods and COVID-19 all have long-term effects on our cities, towns, land, environment and people. These national, place-based challenges require collaborative solutions that must be data-driven, provide insightful analysis, and be easy for anyone, anywhere to use.
Come and join us in Canberra where you will have an opportunity to network with national and international colleagues, have direct access to industry and subject matter experts, see the newest technology, and be introduced to the newest ideas in the spatial and surveying sector.

Locate20 became Locate21 and then become online.....
Locate 21 was planned with Brisbane as the primary hub, along with live sites in other key states, on 29 March - 1 April 2021, however a snap lockdown the day prior moved the event to primarily online. It was a challenging year to say the least!
However our attendees both online and in the other lives sites were still able to hear how geospatial and location technologies and practices are being used, highlighting the fundamental role they play in the building of our digital economy. Speakers also explored the convergence of the spatial industry and the influence and importance of our industry to broader, non-traditional, industries and the Australian economy.
SSSI and SIBA|GITA were very grateful for the support of all those involved with Locate21. The following images are a snap shot of the four-day event.
Special thanks must go to our sponsors:
- Platinum sponsor: Vexcel Imaging
- Gold sponsors: Esri Australia, Geoscience Australia, GHD Digital, HERE Technologies, Maxar, Nearmap and Planet
- Silver sponsors: 1Spatial, Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation, Anditi, L3Harris, Omnilink, RIEGL, SBG Systems
- And finally thank you to our Bronze & Live Site sponsors
Locate is over for another year! An incredible few days with more than 150 speakers, 40 exhibitors and a record breaking 900+ delegates. Thank you to all the SSSI members who attended – we hope you found it as informative and thought provoking as we did, and we hope you had the chance to catch up with colleagues old and new over the three days.

SSSI Presidents’ Breakfast Meeting
At Locate18 in Adelaide, an informal meeting of leaders from relevant professional associations and industry bodies was held. It was so well received, that a more formal meeting of the group was convened at the ISNSW Conference on Australia Day this year and we are pleased to report that we continued this with an official Presidents’ Breakfast during Locate19.
16 representatives from groups across Australia, New Zealand and ASEAN, came together for this genuine opportunity to discuss shared challenges, the future of the industry, and most importantly, ways of working together to achieve shared goals.
