Locate is our national conference, held in May each year across the country. It is jointly hosted by SSSI and SIBA|GITA.
Each year, the conference attracts national and international delegates and as Australia’s premier geospatial conference, provides attendees with an unprecedented opportunity to learn about the latest trends and applications in geospatial technologies and harness the power of location.
The Oceanic Finals of the Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards are also held during Locate.
LOCATE22
Locate returned in the traditional format of a live event at the National Convention Centre Canberra on 24 - 26 May 2022, after two long years of virtual events.
Highlights? Too many to list them all! On Tuesday it was lovely meeting the students and young professionals, especially those at Locate for the first time. Excellent ideas and projects were discussed in both the YP workshop and the Locate Symposium and it’s clear that the future of our industry is in safe hands.
Our MC Catherine Ball led us through the Wednesday and Thursday plenaries with enthusiasm and drew out a number of great insights during the Q&A sessions. All the speakers were fantastic and several plenary speakers discussed the future of the industry from multiple perspectives. Dr Fiona McKenzie’s presentation on megatrends and potential impacts of changes across society was particularly thought provoking. Not to mention being a timely reminder about how intertwined the spatial industry is with modern technology and society. This was further enhanced by updates and discussions on opportunities for industry and government from Mel Harris from ANZLIC, Dr James Johnson from Geoscience Australia and Dr David Gruen AO from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. It is great to see the value and power of spatial technology and data being recognised across such a broad range of applications.
Exploring the exhibition hall and seeing all the exciting new things companies and organisations are working on was a definite high point, along with the chance to chat with sponsors. It was great to see that innovation had not slowed down during the pandemic – there are so many companies doing amazing things with spatial data and technology! Overall, it was a full three days of learning, thinking, exploring and catching up with friends, old and new.
Locate21
Locate20 became Locate21 and then became online.....
Locate 21 was planned with Brisbane as the primary hub, along with live sites in other key states, on 29 March - 1 April 2021, however a snap lockdown the day prior moved the event to primarily online. It was a challenging year to say the least!
However our attendees both online and in the other lives sites were still able to hear how geospatial and location technologies and practices are being used, highlighting the fundamental role they play in the building of our digital economy. Speakers also explored the convergence of the spatial industry and the influence and importance of our industry to broader, non-traditional, industries and the Australian economy.

Locate is over for another year! An incredible few days with more than 150 speakers, 40 exhibitors and a record breaking 900+ delegates. Thank you to all the SSSI members who attended – we hope you found it as informative and thought provoking as we did, and we hope you had the chance to catch up with colleagues old and new over the three days.

Program
The Co-Convenors & the Organising Committee did an amazing done in putting together a program of talks from across all sectors of our industry. From plenary speakers, to concurrent sessions, panels and The Hub, there was a wealth of options for delegates to participate in.

Exhibition
Organisations from across the surveying and spatial sciences profession came together in the Market Hall to demonstrate their latest technology, share their experiences and offer delegates the chance to have a chat to them about their needs.
Gala Dinner
The Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards were held on the Tuesday evening - an outstanding opportunity to highlight the dedication and innovation of the professionals in our industry.

SSSI Presidents’ Breakfast Meeting
At Locate18 in Adelaide, an informal meeting of leaders from relevant professional associations and industry bodies was held. It was so well received, that a more formal meeting of the group was convened at the ISNSW Conference on Australia Day this year and we are pleased to report that we continued this with an official Presidents’ Breakfast during Locate19.
16 representatives from groups across Australia, New Zealand and ASEAN, came together for this genuine opportunity to discuss shared challenges, the future of the industry, and most importantly, ways of working together to achieve shared goals.
