Save the date for the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Commission IV (Spatial Information Science) international symposium being proudly hosted by SSSI in Perth in October 2024.

From 1^st February 2023, anyone placing traffic control devices on roads under the coordination of Head, Transport for Victoria  such as the orange symbolic worker sign, cones and bollards, needs to be appropriately accredited in accordance with the Traffic Management Reform (TMR) program.

Gladys West, is a black female mathematician for the Navy whose work made a major contribution to the development of the Global Positioning System. This month, Dr. Gladys West was inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Pentagon. The Pioneers Hall of Fame is one of Air Force’s Space Commands Highest Honours. 

On Friday 30 November 2018, at Parliament House Brisbane, SSSI Qld was proud to confer Hon. Fellow SSSI to Mr. Ewen Sneddon & Fellow SSSI to Mr. Ray Tabulo. These indviduals have made a significant contribution to the Institute and to the surveying and spatial science profession over many years.

Another relevant safety notice. This one particularly as this involved DYNEEMA core PET rope, very common now with mooring vessels of all tonnage. Please note by-line, “Due to a complex snap-back trajectory, the rope hit the officer monitoring the operation on the back of the head, even though he was in a designated safe area”

The launch of Geography. Shaping Australia’s Future was held yesterday (22/11/2018) at the University of Sydney.

Produced by the National Committee for Geographical Sciences under the auspices of the Australian Academy of Science, Geography. Shaping Australia’s Future, is the decadal plan for Geography in Australia. This strategic plan, explains the contribution that geography makes to the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of Australians and Australia through research, education, training, skills, expertise and engagement with industry and the community.

CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, and agtech startup Ceres Tag have created a new type of ‘fit bit’ to help farmers to keep track of where their livestock are and what they are doing.

Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, is investing $35M in frontier research in Space Technology and Artificial Intelligence.

For 60 years New Zealand years surveyors have been continually involved in the Antarctic. This week, Survey and Spatial NZ and the Antarctic Society have joined together for a 60 year celebration running from the first Government Surveying and Geological expedition in 1957-1958.

Roadmasters House Museum closed for the year on Thursday 31 October. A function was held the following afternoon at which the contribution of sponsors, volunteers and supporters was acknowledged. An Australia Pacific Islands Needs Workshop on Establishment of an Earth Observation Platform to support Pacific Island Nation Environmental, Climate and livelihood needs took place on 11 & 12 October 2018 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Geoscience Australia and FrontierSI are seeking to shape the future DEA with this national series, kicking off nationally in October, which will help set priorities for DEA’s full $36.9 million funding over the next four years, announced in the 2018 federal budget.

On 6 September 2018, the Hon Yvette D'Ath, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Leader of the House, referred an inquiry to the State Development, Natural Resources and Agricultural Industry Development Committee to examine the opportunities to create jobs across Queensland, in particular regional Queensland, and promote existing supply chain capability from the establishment of an Australian space industry.

In order to highlight the importance of surveyors, their job and the fields in which they work, the date 21 March has been chosen and named Global Surveyors’ Day.

Our SSSI President, Zaffar Sadiq Mohamed-Ghouse, attended the Prime Minister's Science Award, held at Parliament House on 17 October 2018.  He had Prof Lisa Harvey, Australia's first STEM Ambassador on his table, she was also the MC for the evening. The anticipated Federal Budget announcement of seed funding for an Australian Space Agency has been warmly welcomed by the Surveying & Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI), the peak body for Australia’s spatial professionals.

UNSW Canberra Space and CNES have a signed a Letter of Intent for a partnership to study a breakthrough remote-sensing satellite that will be capable of monitoring the health of the coral reefs near Australia and in the South Pacific.

Curtin University has been running a seminar series referred to as the Spatial Sciences Colloquium series since 2014. The next colloquium will take place on Tuesday 8 May 2018 at 5pm. 

The 39th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS 2018) will take place from 15 to 19 October 2018. ACRS 2018 will held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur.

Rapid changes in social, economic, security and environmental conditions are occurring at a global level, but leveraging Geospatial Big Data can help us develop more impactful, regionally-specific solutions.

During the week commencing 5 March 2018, the Earth Observation Industry Mission to Australia was held.  This event was hosted by the CRCSI and the European Association of Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC).  The week was organised to bring Earth Observation specialists from the European Union and Australia together with the aim of teaming them up to bid for Horizon2020 funding.

Like Unoccupied Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), the popularity of Unoccupied Surface Vessels (USVs) for hydrographic surveys has skyrocketed in recent years. Commercial demand has seen the price of USVs reduce year on year whilst relative performance continues to increase.

The Board has received requests from employers to issue registration renewals direct to the employer instead of the individual registrant, and in some cases to reissue the tax invoice in the name of the employer. 
 
The Board’s responsibility is linked to the registrant and to maintain the required statutory information for each registrant. The Board readily accepts that some employers pay fees for their staff. However, this is an arrangement between the employer and their staff.  It is the registrant’s responsibility to complete and lodge any forms and pay the prescribed fee. 

We would like to advise you of a new National APSEA award that is now open for entry - The GITA National Excellence Award. Entries close on 26 March 2018.
