SSSI Hydrography Commission News – July 2019

June 30, 2019

SSSI spanned the Pacific for World Hydrography Day on 21 June this year!

John Maschke, NT representative on the Commission, ran a very successful day in Suva which His Excellency the Australian High Commissioner, who was a presenter, along with the Fijian Hydrographer attended.

John sent the following message to the SSSI Ian Halls Tribute Night which included the Ian Halls Memorial and SSSI World Hydrography Day Paces:

"I am sorry that I could not be there for Ian’s WHD Tribute Dinner. I am currently in Suva providing a World Hydrography Day Seminar in my role as Chair, SW Pacific Region of the Australasian Hydrographic Society. Ian assisted in providing Society funds for this activity through his position as the Society’s Treasurer. Ian joined the Society one year earlier than me and always conducted himself in a truly professional way, taking pride in anything that he did, and doing it to the best of his ability, in his characteristic quiet, humble manner."

It was a great privilege to host Commodore Fiona Freeman, RAN, who joined us in Sydney and is pictured below with the two trophies presented. A number of people had also travelled to attend, which was most appreciated and a fitting testament.

Thanks to Qld representative, Celine Roux, who is the Senior Engineer – Tweed Sand Bypassing – Coastal Impacts Unit, Department of Environment and Science, for this article:

It contains interesting facts about the surge and storm tide levels measured as well as post-cyclone beach profiles.

The article demonstrates how hydrography supports general public safety in the coastal zone.
