New Hydrographic Diploma Course - feedback wanted!

June 30, 2018

As part of the education initiative to provide Hydrographic Surveying qualifications in Australia, the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI) and Australasian Hydrographic Society (AHS) have, over past 10 years been engaging with industry and education institutes to initiate appropriate courses.  In the last year, the Chair of the SSSI Hydrography Commission and the Education Rep, have been working closely with Australian Industry Standards (AIS) to facilitate a course package which when finalised will become fully scoped on the National curriculum.  The advantage of this is that student and institution costs will be significantly cheaper than bespoke training and there will be a specific focus on hydrographic surveying skills.

The Diploma of Water Industry Operations – Hydrographic Surveying is now open for public / industry comment and can be accessed from the link below.  The Diploma of Water Industry Operations has multiple streams and people reviewing the hydrographic surveying stream should be aware of that they need only review that component of the Diploma.  Having said that however, anyone from the other streams are welcome to comment on those modules also.

The hydrographic modules are components taken from the International Hydrographic Organisation S5B syllabus and only deal with hydrographic technology, principles and science.  There is a prerequisite for those entering the Diploma to first (or post) complete a Certificate IV in Surveying or higher.  This should then open the pathway to certification for many already land survey qualified individuals via the Australasian Hydrographic Surveyors Certification Panel (AHSCP) as: Cert IV + Diploma = Level 2 or Bachelor + Diploma = Level 1.

There are multiple information documents on the same page as the link for ‘Have your say', which you may also wish to review about this topic but for now, the SSSI, AHS and AIS welcome your input to this process.
