Under the leadership of Mark Hickey, the SSSI Qld Conference 2018 is planned for 23/24 August. Are you able participate in making presentations or help in some other way? Please click here for details.

Chris Swane – Thanks

The QRC met on 20 March 2018. Shortly after the meeting Chris Swane resigned from his role as Deputy Chair. This event caused us to reflect upon the huge contribution he has made to SSSI Qld over many years. In August 2016 he was awarded an upgrade to SSSI Fellow to highlight our appreciation of his invaluable work. Thanks Chris, I know you are continuing your involvement in the Land Surveying Commission and we know you will maintain a vigilant oversight.

At the next QRC meeting, a replacement for Chris will be formally addressed. Paul Reed has indicated his willingness to assume this role. There may be others, so I look forward to receiving advice about others who wish to assume this leadership challenge.

Strategic Planning Workshop

On Sunday, 8 April, the SSSI Board is conducting a Strategic Planning Workshop.  This event is proposed to establish the direction of SSSI for the immediate future. If you have concerns or proposals, please email details of such by Saturday night so I can put them forward at the workshop.

New SSSI Fellows – Nominations

Do you know someone whose efforts should be recognised by SSSI? Can you please advise Kelly or myself, so we can instigate the process to include these people in an award ceremony as part of the planned Fellows Dinner?  We look forward to your urgent advice by email.

We are currently addressing some major issues confronting our industry:

  • Access to railway land to conduct cadastral or other surveys. QR Ltd and Aurizon are requiring surveyors to seek their approval to enter railway land. This include significant lead times and fees. It seems this conflicts with the provisions of the SMI Act

  • GNSS appears to present problems to surveyors. It seems that the understanding of software and the calculation of positional uncertainties is the key issue. Your contribution to assisting the resolution of these concerns would be appreciated along with participation in the workshop on 20 April.

  • The impact of the new vegetation protection legislation is another concern. Can you provide your concerns or advice on these new regulations?

Town Groups and Engineering & Mine Surveying Commission

We are trying reinvigorate the SSSI Town Groups and the EMSC in Queensland.

Are you willing to participate?

Can you help?

Please contact Kelly or myself and help us achieve this revival.

Qld Spatial Information & Cartography Commission (SICC) Chair - Angus Scown

The first of our series of webinars for SSSI Qld SICC Members was held on 27 March. The topic was “Using Spatial Technologies for Economic Evaluation of Prescribed Fire” presented by Martyn Elliott from the University of the Sunshine Coast. The overall research question addressed by the project is whether prescribed fire can be an economically efficient bushfire risk mitigation tool in southeast Queensland.  This can now be viewed as ECPD on our website.  .

Qld Land Surveying Commission (LSC) Chair - Ewen Sneddon

Major discussions at last meeting included mentoring of young surveyors, Re publishing of  A.G Brown’s book or parts of and Reinstatement Principles and Practice  1996, working on Railways in response to queries from NQ Surveyors and Digital data readiness.

We have been putting the final touches on the student grant project, it is release now, and the networking event we are running at Bowen is all but finalised.

We have G Campbell presenting a workshop on GNSS and chairing a discussion on Surveyors rights- we are finalising the details on one more session, possibly presented on GNSS errors by Evan Brandis (CRK)

Qld Central Group Chair -  Tom McDonald

.The 2018 Central Group Seminar is taking place at the Hotel Jen Brisbane on Saturday 12 May. This year, it is being held in Brisbane to give members of the Central region an opportunity to network with colleagues in Brisbane and also attend the double-header NRL match on the Saturday evening.
We do hope you can join us. Please click here for further information.

Advocacy Issues

VET in Schools

There has been a lot happening in this arena in February/March.  See details from Paul Reed, our SSSI Qld General Representative.

The following brief was provided to the Minister for the Environment, Natural Resources, Mines and Energy to ask for the return of the subsidy for the VET in schools program:

The Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI) have for some time held serious concerns in regard to the aging of the Surveying profession and the future shortfall and potential skills gap.

An analysis in 2013 found a number of reasons to support a case for Junior Technicians not only to attract more people into the industry but to help provide better skills for those already in the industry. SSSI Queensland would like to see the provision of more junior technicians in the Surveying and Geospatial industry.

A number of High Schools have expressed their interest in offering the Cert 2 in surveying and Spatial Information Services (SIS) via the VET in schools program. Not only is this an interesting program to offer to students but it allows employers to meet and assess potential employees using the work experience segment of the training.

Our overall aim is to find a Queensland-based RTO (Registered Training Organisation) that is willing to work with the industry to offer (over time) certificates and diplomas in surveying and geospatial. Our initial focus would aim to get the Certificate 2 in surveying offered under the VET in schools program.   For this we would like the State government to help us in this regard by getting VET in schools subsidy reinstated.

SSSI is also currently seeking support from employers including larger firms in the Construction Industry for this effort. We are asking firms to indicate that they would be willing to provide work experience to students in Year 11/12 doing the Cert 2 or 3 via the VET in schools program and to later consider employment of these students. SIBA and Destination Spatial are also in support of this effort.

In collaboration with Construction Skills Queensland and Destination Spatial we will play a role in organising events such as “Try a Trade” to introduce students to the world of surveying and SIS and to offer them an opportunity to enter the industry. WorldSkills Qld have also been involved in similar programs and are willing to support these events in the future.

Paul and Dr Ken Lyons met with SkillsTech Tafe’s new manager who has agreed to take on the role of RTO for Queensland and will soon begin the process of making the application for funding for the CERT II course.

SSSI are seeking letters of support from all areas of the industry (employers and Industry bodies) to assist in the application to the Government to see the funding returned.

Ultimately SSSI are trying to promote our industry to school goers to ensure that the shortfall in qualified people will not be as severe as we are expecting.

Qld LSC Advocacy

We are looking to have Q and A section on the Website where your questions and queries can be answer by Peer Surveyors and other qualified persons.
