SSSI QLD News - July 2018

June 30, 2018

Please find below information on what is happening at the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute Queensland as of July 2018.

Chair/ROM Reports

Qld Regional Chair -  Roy Somerville

I was very proud to present Awards to two outstanding young students at Griffith University recently.  SSSI Qld sponsors students prizes at Griffith University and in 2018 we were pleased to provide a certificate and complimentary SSSI Membership to:

  • Lily Weir - GIS Prize

  • Kelly Rawding - Remote Sensing Prize

  • William Taylor - Honours/Masters Prize (not pictured)

Qld Land Surveying Commission (LSC) Chair - Ewen Sneddon

At our last meeting we had a presentation from Glen Carey, Industry Engagement Officer from Construction Skills Qld (CSQ). They have run a couple of pilot projects and are now looking to set up 10 hubs around Queensland relating to their Gateway to Industry Schools Program.

The idea of the project is to bring Schools and Organisations together to give year 11-12 students the chance of a week or two’s work experience in a professional or para professional role which will hopefully assist them in choosing a career.  The professions of Surveying and Spatial Science will be included in this program if there is sufficient interest from our industry. Members at our meeting indicated their support for this program. As such we would like to bring this initiative to the attention of all member firms across Queensland. Here is an opportunity to allow students to be introduced to people and firms in our profession.  There is no cost to our industry but only the benefit of meeting with prospective employees.

If your organisation is interested in a taking on year 11-12 students for work experience please get in touch with either Paul Reed or the SSSI office

Also, recently survey issues relating to Lease (building) surveys have been brought to the committee’s attention - we will be asking for our members thoughts on the issue soon and will share these the DNRME.

Qld Northern Group Chair - Stephen Jess

The Northern Group is very pleased to announce the deserving recipients of our Early Career Support Fund, providing financial support for our local members to attend university residential schools and key surveying & spatial science events.

  • Vaughn Golding

  • Jake Linnett

  • Fletcher Magill

  • Mitchell Whittington

Congratulations to you all! We will be in contact shortly to confirm all arrangements.

Qld Central Group Chair -  Tom McDonald

The Central Group is pleased to announce the venue for their annual conference has been secured.  The Conference will be taking place on Thursday 18 - Friday 19 October at Rockhampton Leagues Club. Please save the date in your diaries!

We have also recently decided to offer an Early Career Support Fund for local members who are students or professionals at the start of their careers to assist with funding to attend university residential schools or key events.  More information will be available soon so keep an eye on your inboxes for this.

Regional Operations Manager (ROM) Report - Kelly Rischmiler

Have you entered the Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards - Queensland?

Nominations have been extended to close on 30 July 2018 (individual awards only), so nominate a colleague or someone you know who is doing outstanding work in their field.

The Awards will be held on Friday 24 August, at Brisbane City Hall, in conjunction with the SSSI Queensland Conference 2018, taking place over Thursday 23 - Friday 24 August in the same venue.

The awards are a great opportunity to showcase the innovative projects being undertaken by Queensland organisations and recognise individual excellence. Jointly hosted by SSSI and SIBA|GITA, the awards are open to any individual or organisation — private, public, academic or not for profit.

Tickets for the dinner are now on sale - they can purchased as part of your Conference registration or separately.

For more information and to nominate, visit the APSEAQ page.

Queensland Spatial Information Council (QSIC) Seminar on 23 May 2018

Review of the QSIC Seminar series on 23 May by Peter Kinne.

Presentations are available -

This session was well attended, and the room was at capacity. The audience was mainly State government with some private companies.

There was a noticeable loss of audience at lunch time and this seemed to be mainly surveyors leaving after the surveying sessions had completed.

A short summary of the presentations is as follows.

Steve Jacoby PSM – Queensland’s Spatial Outlook
This presentation identifies the challenges facing the government’s position as the authoritative source of data.  Changes in technology and sources of data have been necessary to maintain the department’s lead role. Projects to take the department forward and meet customer needs include 3D Cadastre, Cloud Analytics, and augmented reality.

The State government’s 2017 investment in imagery has made possible a 3m imagery dataset for Queensland and a copy was given away as a prize on the day.

Glenn Cockerton – 2017: A year of Action
Glenn reported on the progress 2026 Spatial Industry Transformation and Growth Agenda.

The focus areas include:

  • Significantly expand the impact in high priority growth sectors

  • Growth sector economic profiles of the value of positioning, earth observation data and services

  • Delivery of strategic roadmap to build education and skills across the entire spatial education lifecycle

  • Promotion and strategic engagement with external industry conferences

Karen Joyce – DronED: Problem based learning in STEM
This was an inspirational presentation about making a difference.  A remote sensing scientist who is passionate about achieving equality in her field and is doing something about it. Using drones, satellite imagery, and remote tropical islands Karen’s talk included counting sharks, mangoes, and teaching kids through her company, SheFlies.

Matt Higgins – Cadastre Queensland Transformation
We live in a 3D world and yet the cadastral surveying industry is still working out how to explain the world in more than 2D. The complexity of this transition is being tackled in stages to determine the investment needed and the business case to justify it.

Matt covered GDA 2020, the $260M SBAS project, and finding buried assets.

Peter SIPPEL – 3D Road Map The realisation of a Digital Spatial Future
Why we need to move to digitally integrated datasets and how 3D Cadastre is a fundamental framework for these datasets.

Foundational Data Sets require a single point of Truth and this is possible from the surveying industry through:

  • Geodetic Framework

  • Digital Numeric Cadastral Data set

  • Digital Infrastructure Environment (ADAC etc. ......)

  • Digital Built Environment (DBE)

  • Seemless Integration of Digital Data

Peter Kinne – WorldView Legion and Machine Learning for Business Benefit
The user feedback included that this was the most colourful presentation of the day. Addressing the need for more timely information products in cloud solutions, this presentation included a successful live demo of cloud-based analytics using a recent 30cm 8band image of Brisbane on slow internet connection.

Deanna Hutchinson – Vitamin D
This is a time for us to review diversity in our industry. Woods NZ is an example of how diversity has resulted in increased competitiveness, reduced staff turnover, and selected Best Employer by Aon in 2017.

The spatial industry can benefit from reviewing diversity in their workplaces.

Reinstatement for the less Experienced

Our Land Surveying Commission Qld Chair, Ewen Sneddon, once again delivered his workshop on reinstatement, this time to over 25 local Gold Coast and Northern NSW attendees at Southport Sharks on Thursday 7 June.

NSW Cadastral Seminar

Following on from the Reinstatement seminar, almost 30 members and non-members got together to hear from David Job, Chris Abbott and John Minehan on relevant cadastral updates and issues for the NSW region.  A number of our Queensland members are registered in both states, so this was an ideal opportunity to see informative presentations, network with other professionals and gain those all important CPD points.
