Chair's Report – Paul Reed
Membership Renewals

You should have by now received your renewal for the 2019-20 financial year. We sincerely hope you will rejoin us for another year – we are working hard to continue to offer great value to our members through quality events and CPD, advocacy and networking opportunities. If you have any queries about your membership or the benefits, visit the SSSI membership page on our website or contact us.

South East Asian Survey Congress

I have just registered to attend this international event, taking place in August in Darwin, and wanted to encourage you to consider joining me and other colleagues from across the industry at this special event.

The program convenors, one of which is local Queensland Board member Lee Hellen, have really put together an outstanding program of speakers, workshops (with applicable CPD points) and networking opportunities. See our latest news for more information and or visit the congress website to view the program and register.

Encouraging the future

Two of our Central Group members, Alan Maclean and Rod Baxter, attended Biloela State High School's career event last week. They chatted with students about careers in surveying and spatial sciences and distributed materials on the profession, provided by Destination Spatial. Alan reports he has convinced at least one senior student to apply for a surveying course at uni plus chatted to heaps more!

Brilliant work – thanks so much Alan and Rod.

Vale John Cook

Dr John Cook passed away last Sunday at the nursing home in Mackay, where he fought bravely against the severe incapacity he suffered after a stroke some years ago.

He will be remembered in the profession as a towering intellect, a strong voice for the principles he believed in, and a faithful supporter of his profession over many years. He was a Fellow of the Institution of Surveyors Australia, Queensland Division, and served as a Councillor on ISA Inc. and as a Divisional Committee member in Queensland.

His funeral was held at the Whitsunday Funeral Parlour Mackay on Friday 28 June.

As always, if you have any queries, concerns or suggestions on SSSI Queensland or a surveying or spatial science matter you need assistance with, you are most welcome to contact me on
