Qld Regional Chair - Roy Somerville
It was a good month for members and there were good events held with the Central Group event, Graduate Workshop, Reinstatement Workshop and YP Event. The Graduate workshop was a very successful day and SSSI now have a really good understanding on where Graduates are at.
The May events have been excellent, and I wouild like to thank Katie Le Miere, our Events & Administration Officer for all her efforts. It was a credit to our SSSI Qld Staff, Katie and Kelly, for those events and a good team effort from our SSSI Qld volunteers, Ewen Sneddon, Paul Reed, Tom McDonald and Dale Atkinson too.
The highlight for the Graduate Workship was a session on cameo of professions presented by Peter Kinne and Angus Scown which highlighted diversity in our industry. Steve Steggell and Dale Atkinson also had very good presentations. Katie Le Miere and Tom McDonald did a really good job in putting it all together.
The YP Tour of Queen's Wharf, presented by Bennett + Bennett, has also received a lot of positive feedback. Thank you to Bennett + Bennett for showcasing their work.
Qld Land Surveying Commission (LSC) Chair - Ewen Sneddon
A successful Reinstatement seminar for less experienced Surveyors was held prior to the graduate Workshop in May. A second seminar is to be held on Thursday 7 June before the Seminar for NSW registered Surveyors. See: Reinstatement for the less experienced & NSW Cadastral Seminar QLD315
Topics currently being discussed by the committee include, GDA2020, Lease master sketches, Using GNSS, Revising and updating the publication Restatement Principles and Practice !996 mentoring of younger surveyors, VET programs and Digital data readiness.
Qld Northern Group Chair - Stephen Jess
Our Bowen networking / GNSS event went off really well, we were hoping for 20 to 30 attendees and we got 26.
All attendees at the event that I had a chance to speak to want it done again next year- so went off well- great content thanks to Dale Atkinson and Glenn Campbell. I will be liaising with the Cairns Town Group to see if they want to run a similar format/content there.
Qld Central Group Chair - Tom McDonald
Central Group Seminar
At our last conference in Hervey Bay, surveyors wanted a short and sharp conference next time.
On May 12, The Central Group ran a mini conference (9-4) at the Hotel Jen Brisbane which was attended by CQ surveyors and some from Brisbane.
Practical GNSS applications/meeting standards was the key topic that was very well presented by Jeff Pickford from DNRME. Other topics discussed included the new tree clearing laws, Qld Globe, mentoring, accuracy deliverables from Drones, to mention a few. SBQ and DNRME reports were also presented.
We look forward to our next conference in Rockhampton October 18-19.
The same venue on the Friday before, the Graduates workshop for Brisbane was well attended and appreciated by the young and not so young surveyors.
Bundarberg Career Day
Thanks to the Town Group members Graham Bent, Trevor Garrett, Martin Cole, Tom McDonald, Joe Sorbello and his Chainy, Clint, for their efforts in making the SSSI-DSQ presence a success in Bundaberg.
Hundreds of students passed the SSSI-DSQ stall, with a few direct queries. The greatest interest of the day (as featured in the local newspaper ) was for the TAFE, which featured a DRONE/UAV flying display.
Perhaps next time, we can organise a cooperative display, showing how DRONE data is used in the real world of positioning?

Graham Bent, Bundaberg Surveyor, discusses surveying as a career, to a senior school student, at the Bundaberg careers expo. May 2018
