SSSI QLD News – March 2020

Chair's Report – Paul Reed

We seem to have gotten off to a flying start very early this year - I wonder if all our members are finding it as busy as we are here at SSSI Qld?! Christmas holidays seem like a distant memory...

Planning for Locate20, which is taking place on 28 - 30 April in Brisbane, is going well.

Registration is open and we have released the program for the event.  I particularly wanted to highlight the strong surveying stream we have put together this year, including presentations on:

  • the changes regarding eLodgement of survey plans and modernising the cadastre from DNMRE
  • UAV use and data processing
  • Rural surveying
  • New digital tools and technology

There is also a dedicated Young Professional Symposium this year, giving the younger members of our profession a chance to engage and understand the key issues happening in the industry.

I do hope you will be able to attend the conference - I am confident you will find it an outstanding opportunity to learn about current challenges and new ideas and network with like-minded professionals. CPD points will be available (both general SSSI and BOSSI) and there is also a large exhibition where you try out all the latest tech from our suppliers.  So please visit the Locate20 website to find out more and register.

We are working on a series of webinars from some of the fantastic presentations that were given at last year's Brisbane, Central and Northern Group conferences.  We hope to hold one every few weeks or so, giving members (and non-members) who were unable to attend one of the events a chance to access quality presentations.  Dates and topics to be announced shortly!

Vale Don Bilston

Don Bilston, a respected surveyor based on the Gold Coast, passed away peacefully on 20 February, aged 77.  SSSI passes on our condolences to his family and friends.

Queensland's Space Industry

The Queensland government has announced an $8 million investment in the state’s space sector with the launch of its Space Industry Strategy 2020-2025.

Positioning the announcement and investment as a jobs-creation measure, the announcement of the strategy was made by Minister for State Development Cameron Dick at Gilmour Space at the Gold Coast.

“Fifty years after humankind first walked on the moon, we are setting up Queensland’s space industry for the next 50 years,” he said.

“Because when it comes to the space industry, we want to see Queensland boldly go where no state has gone before.”

Titles Registry

In late January, SSSI Queensland received a letter from the Titles Registrar, Liz Dann, outlining proposed changes to lodgement of survey plans and the associated forms. Our Qld Land Surveying Commission reviewed the letter and invited the Department to give a presentation on the changes at our CSR Forum in January.  As further information becomes available, we will share this with our members. The DNRME hopes to make changes by July 2020.

Event Highlights
Bushfire Map-a-thon

Approximately 20 local Brisbane spatial professionals gave up their Sunday on 9 February to help the bushfire recovery effort by mapping areas of damage.

The map-a-thon was held at six locations (Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart and Brisbane) across Australia, and participants could take part remotely from their own homes or offices. Forty-four teams participated from office or home locations, alongside nearly 300 individuals from within Australia and over 100 from overseas from 26 countries.

A total of 2,793,879 hectares were mapped, with 15,731 edits, 13,891 building edits, 1,091 damaged features mapped and 945 damaged buildings were mapped.  A great effort by all involved!
