Chair's Report - Paul Reed
February has been a month to really get ready for the year ahead, particularly with regards to events. The regional committee have been working with our local commission representatives to determine what events and training might be of interest to our members in 2019 and we are pleased to announce our first event for the year - a Cadastral Reinstatement Workshop being held in Brisbane on 5 April. If you are a surveyor starting out or just looking to update your skills, I encourage you have a look. More events will be announced soon.
I am also pleased to advise that I have been invited to join the Queensland Spatial Information Council. QSIC is an important group in our professional that helps facilitate the governance, education, awareness, coordination and open access of Queensland’s spatial information.
Lastly, on behalf of SSSI, we pass our condolences onto those affected by the recent floods in Townsville. We know a number of our members were affected personally, but also have been showing that true Queensland spirit and helping out those in need. If any surveying or spatial businesses need assistance, the Queensland Government is offering recovery grants. More information can be found here.
As always, if you have any queries, concerns or suggestions on SSSI Queensland or a surveying or spatial science matter you need assistance with, you are most welcome to contact me on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Central Group Chair
Tom McDonald has recently stepped down from the role as Chair of the Queensland Central Group and we are pleased to announce that Andrew Jensen from InsiteSJC has kindly offered to take up the position. Andrew is a highly experienced surveyor from Bundaberg, and has been valued member of SSSI and the Central Region for some time. Andrew will be assisted by Joe Sorbello, also from InsiteSJC, as Vice-Chair. We welcome Andrew and Joe and sincerely thank Tom for his fantastic contribution as the 2018 Chair.
As you would be aware, we are very fortunate to have the ongoing support in Queensland of some fantastic organisations. We are working with these partners - C.R. Kennedy, Qld Dept of Transport & Main Roads, UPG, Cairns Regional Council, Qld Survey Pegs, The University of Queensland and the University of the Sunshine Coast - to find innovative ways to strengthen our partnerships and provide value to our members through this engagement.
One of these valued supporters, Ultimate Positioning Group, who also supports SSSI in other states and nationally, is holding an exciting major conference series in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne in March that some of our members may be interested in attending. Please feel to visit the Transform2019 website for more information.
