SSSI QLD News - May 2019

April 30, 2019
Chair's Report - Paul Reed

Early April was a busy time: I attended three key events I would like to share with you.

Cadastral Reinstatement Workshop
Our first SSSI Qld event for the year and a welcome return by presenter Paul McClelland, following his retirement from DNRME last year. The event was well received by all those who attended and we will be repeating it at the Gold Coast, Gladstone and Townsville.  See below for further details.

I joined colleagues from across Australia at one of the largest Locate Conferences held to date.  I particularly enjoyed "The Hub", a fantastic casual presentation space in the exhibition hall, where some really relevant and interesting topics were discussed.  I also had the pleasure of hosting the two student winners of the 2018 Geospatial Schools Competition - it was fantastic to show them some of the displays and introduce them to key people in the industry.  They truly are the future of our profession!

USQ Presentation Evening

SSSI Queensland is very proud to support a number of prizes at the annual University of Southern Queensland Student Academic Achievement Awards.  Mandy Compton and I attended the awards to present prizes to these outstanding students.

SSSI Centenary Prize - Robert Winter
Awarded to the graduating student in Bachelor of Spatial Science (Honours) (Surveying 4 year degree course) who demonstrates a high level of proficiency in practical and academic work and has demonstrated a sincere interest in the profession.

SSSI Qld Spatial Science Graduate Coursework Prize - Kanta Shirai
Awarded to the graduating student from the Master of Spatial Science Technology or Graduate Diploma of Geomatic Studies who demonstrates the highest level of proficiency in both the coursework and dissertation.

SSSI Northern Group Students Prize - Paul Hoskins (pictured above)
Awarded to the graduating student in the Bachelor of Spatial Science (Honours) or Bachelor of Spatial Science Technology who demonstrates a high level academic achievement and who resides above Rockhampton.

SSSI Qld Spatial Science Technology Prize - Robert Whittlesey
Awarded to the graduating student from the Bachelor of Spatial Science Technology who demonstrates the highest level of proficiency in both practical and academic work.

Congratulations to all the winners!

VET in Schools
We are also continuing our efforts to establish a surveying TAFE course that is offered through schools in Queensland.  I strongly believe a diversity of early, relevant and accessible training opportunities is critical to improving the practitioner shortage in our industry.

As always, if you have any queries, concerns or suggestions on SSSI Queensland or a surveying or spatial science matter you need assistance with, you are most welcome to contact me on
