Qld Regional Chair - Paul Reed
Welcome from New Chair - Paul Reed

It is my pleasure to be elected the new SSSI Qld Chair for 2018 to 2020.
Here is brief introduction to my background:
I was the Vice Chairman of SSSI, was a founding member of SSI and have been involved on the SSSI’s Land Surveying Commission since 2010. I became involved in the SSSI Queensland Regional Committee in the education and training commission in April 2017. I am a registered cadastral surveyor and the principal of the Redlands-based firm East Coast Surveys (Aust) Pty Ltd.
My passion is to continue to see membership growth and improved services but to also see our organisation become instrumental in providing better pathways to surveying and spatial careers. I would like to see better engagement with schools and Queensland students and in so doing raise an awareness of the relevance of the spatial profession to the younger generations.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Roy Somerville, our Past SSSI Qld Chair, for his enormous effort in steering SSSI Qld for the last two years. Over Roy's time as Chair we have seen SSSI Qld's membership grow and our many activities, events and advocacy being better highlighted. Thank you Roy.

Skills for Queensland Consultation forum - South East 2018
Dr Kate Crawford and SSSI Qld Chair, Paul Reed, attended the Skills for Qld consultation Forum held at the Loganlea TAFE.
The forum allowed stakeholders to engage with government to alert them to industry needs in respect to the new VET strategy. We took part in this discussion focussing on the training that we believe could be provided for school students that may be interested in entering the Spatial industry. As with other industries, there are new and emerging industries which require new Cert qualifications. We look forward to meeting with State and local governments in the future in relation our Schools program which we are initiating in Logan.
Critical Skills shortage Meeting 24 Oct 2018
A meeting was held by the SSSI Qld Chair, Paul Reed, and other members of the Queensland Regional Committee with Peter Murphy of the Surveyors Board at which the report by Robert McCabe Titled “Critical Skills shortage – Cadastral Surveyors” was discussed. The problems identified included the public image of the profession; difficulties in registration of graduates and possible eventual deregulation. A solution identified in the report is the possible re introduction of the Survey Practice Course. Another solution is to utilise modules of training that could be provided from tertiary institutions.
It was resolved to:
-
Further identify the issues and problems including further statistics;
-
To encourage better promotion of our profession;
-
Identify Courses and training that could be provided/run to lead towards endorsements;
-
Investigate the certification of engineering surveyors.
-
Continued efforts to look at VET in schools as part of promotion of the Surveying and Spatial sciences.
Future meeting will include feedback from the SBQ in regard to these matters. We will await to hear feedback about the study being undertaken by ACSIS.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
SSSI Qld Central Group Conference

Report by Tom McDonald, SSSI Qld Central Group Chair
Success of the Central Group Conference
Held at the Rockhampton Leagues club, the October18 to 19 conference was well attended by members and non-members. Two streams of seminars (Survey and GIS) were run, with both appreciated by attendees. The event ran with a small profit, which will be put towards our future operations and functions for members benefit.
The Chair opened the conference by reiterating the Mission and Vision of the SSSI, and its importance and necessity for us as professionals.
Thanks to Leigh Tingle and Ray Tabulo who planned and arranged the conference, and to our sponsors who supported the event.
3D Digital Cadastral Future, Rural Surveying techniques, Scanning into the future, Robotics, Scanners, Evaluation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) data, Data Integrity and Data Ethics, Satellite remote sensing helping koala habitat, and Open Source software, were just a few of the informative seminars delivered at the conference.
Following the conference, our meeting accepted three new committee members, to assist in organising the 2019 Central Group activities. Thank you to Michael Hewson (CQU Rockhampton), Leigh Tingle (Vision Surveys Rockhampton) and Joe Sorbello (Insite SJC Bundaberg).
Update from the SSSI Qld Central Group
It has been proposed that our 2019 conference be a JOINT conference with the Northern group at Mackay.
Central Group will also sponsor a Bursary in 2019 that will offer financial assistance to (up to) four of our regional Students or YPs to attend SSSI events.
We have nominated member, Rob Baxter to seek out Engineering and Mining surveyors in the district, and invite them to be part of our organisation.
It was also suggested that we include in future conference material, a list of attendees and their contacts, which will open up lines of communication and introduction opportunities between members.
