Chair's Report – Paul Reed
It has been an incredibly busy time for SSSI Queensland the past month! We have held three key events - Qld Surveying & Spatial Day, the Qld Spatial Excellence Awards and the Central Group Conference.
I always enjoy meeting with our members and other professionals and I have found the topics recently presented to be highly engaging and relevant. There is a lot to be said for face-to-face networking with industry colleagues. The opportunity to take part in these learning events is critical in these changing digital times. It is here that new professional partnerships are made, friendships created and bonds formed over shared experiences, challenges and achievements.
I hope all who attended the events have learnt something new about the latest technologies and techniques. It is important to stay up to date with latest industry developments, to understand more about the changes happening in and around our key organisations, and to hear some of the visionary ideas being shared about where our industry is headed into the future.
This month, we have the two final events for the year - the Northern Group Conference in Cairns on 21 - 22 November and an end of year celebration for members, which includes the conclusion of the 2019 YP Mentoring Program, taking place at the Regatta Hotel in Brisbane on Friday 29 November.
Prior to the EOY Celebration, our committee is getting together to plan the events for 2020 and to discuss priorities for SSSI Queensland. If you have any suggestions for seminars, workshops or webinars you would like to see next year, or any other matters or ideas you would like us to consider, don't hesitate to contact me on email@example.com.
I would also like to take this opportunity to recognise the passing of Wolfgang Thun GISP. Wolfgang has been a member of the Australian spatial industry since 1993. His expertise was in location included surveying in the Australian Army before working in local government, engineering, and start ups. He will be missed. Please keep Wolfgang’s family in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time.
Qld Surveying & Spatial Day
Our annual conference took place on Friday 18 October at the Brisbane Convention Centre. Over 110 surveying and spatial professionals came together learn, network and see technology displays from our valued sponsors.
We trialed a one day event this year, with multiple streams. The feedback so far has been positive on this format. We hope to set the date for next year's event soon, so keep an eye on your inbox for a save the date!
Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards - Qld
Together with the Spatial Industries Business Association (SIBA|GITA), we hosted the Qld APSEA Dinner on the Friday evening following the conference. This event celebrates the outstanding achievements of both Queensland individuals and companies.
Guests heard a great presentation from Peter Johnstone, CEO of the Clem Jones Group and sponsors of the Undergraduate Award, on Clem Jones' ground breaking work in the surveying industry and his lasting legacies.
The 2019 winners, who are now entered into the national competition which will be awarded at Locate20, were:
- Professional of the Year - Peter Kinne
- Undergraduate of the Year - Kent Olive
- Award for People & Community - FrontierSI and QUT
- Award for Spatial Enablement - Cancer Council Qld, QUT & FrontierSI
- Award for Technical Excellence - Bennett + Bennett

Central Group Conference
The 2019 Central Group Conference this year took place in Gladstone, on 31 October - 1 November. A connected and engaged group of surveyors and spatial professionals from Hervey Bay to Mackay came together to enjoy presentations from a diverse range of speakers (including a practical workshop on reinstatement) whilst catching up over great food and drinks to share stories and current challenges and projects.
Land Surveying News
The Cadastral Survey Requirements (CSR) contain the standards and guidelines for cadastral surveying in Queensland. These standards support the operation of the Land Act 1994, the Land Title Act 1994 and other land-related legislation. Periodically this document is updated by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME) reflecting changes in legislation, departmental expectations and feedback from surveyors. The Department is currently reviewing the standards with the hope of producing a consultation draft in the next few months. Thanks to those LSC members who have contributed their thoughts on this topic - we will be collating the feedback and sending to DNRME shortly.
