Chair's Report – Paul Reed
Nominate for an Excellence Award

Across our industry we have many hard working professionals some of whom have shown remarkable diligence and professionalism, others who have demonstrated remarkable innovation or in some way made an outstanding contribution that should not go without recognition. If you know of someone who should be acknowledged and rewarded for a significant achievement why not consider nominating them for an award this year. There is still time.

I would like to personally encourage you to consider nominating a colleague for an award in the Queensland Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards (APSEA).

Categories include a Women's Leadership Award, Undergad & Postgrad awards and the prestigious Professional and Young Professional of the Year (open to SSSI members only).

Previous APSEA winners include:

  • Dr Karen Joyce, for her establishment of the excellent She Flies program
  • Dale Atkinson, for his outstanding contribution to the surveying industry in the Northern region
  • Peter Swan, for his long standing service to the Queensland profession
  • Sylvia Michael, for her professional contribution, exemplifying the highest standards

And many, many more practioners that show an unfailing commitment to excellence in their chosen field.  Go to our website to find out more and nominate!

I had the pleasure of attending the South East Asian Surveying Congress in Darwin in August.  What a fantastic event! A great program and really outstanding opportunity to share, learn and collaborate with our colleagues from across Asia.  I was particularly impressed with the Young Professionals day.  Congratulation to Rob Sarib and our own Lee Hellen for putting on a fantastic event in the SSSI calendar.

Gold Coast City Council event

I received an invitation to the below event which looks quite interesting. If you are in the Gold Coast area you may wish to attend - it is open to all.

Planning, Development & Economy 2019 | Thu 12 September |  HOTA
The event will provide you with an independent overview of current development activity within the city; discuss some of the key national and regional trends likely to affect planning and development of the Gold Coast; and identify the emerging projects and initiatives being progressed within the Directorate supporting the evolution of the city.

As always, if you have any queries, concerns or suggestions on SSSI Queensland or a surveying or spatial science matter you need assistance with, you are most welcome to contact me on

Land Surveying News
Survey Marks

Rob McCabe from Bennett + Bennett and the Land Surveying Commission have put together an excellent information sheet on ‘Protecting Survey Marks in Queensland’.

The interference of survey marks adversely affects the integrity and accuracy of the cadastre and the productivity and profitability of our industry. The benefits of promoting the value and importance of survey infrastructure to the community include:

  • lessen or prevent the disturbance or destruction of survey marks
  • encourage pro-active measures when the interference of marks is inevitable to preserve the legacy and traceability of survey marks which directly fix property boundaries
  • reinforce the skills, service and expertise surveyors provide
  • raise the profile and image of the profession for the betterment of industry
  • protect the public’s interests and improve public confidence in the profession.
