SID2021 - IT'S A WRAP!

It was with great relief and excitement that the South Australian surveying and spatial sciences community, plus those lucky enough to be able to travel interstate, came together to enjoy Spatial Information Day 2021 (SID21), particularly after the disappointment of 2020’s event being cancelled. With over 320+ delegates attending during the day, every session had an electric atmosphere as friends old and new took full advantage to watch and listen to a varied and fascinating range of keynotes and presentations covering everything from Digital Twins, the Future of Hydrography, and the power of Open Innovation, through to Dr Claire Moore’s SID21 Best Presenter award winning talk on “Where the Wild Things Are”.

The exhibition hall was alive as delegates were able to see the latest technology and services offered by exhibitors including amongst many the Platinum Sponsor CR Kennedy, and Gold Sponsors Aerometrex and UPG. Our full list of sponsors is across the bottom of the page and I encourage you, if they might be able to help you out, to contact them and make an enquiry. Without their support SID would be a shadow of itself.

The day was given the send off it deserves with another spectacular awards evening to celebrate South Australia’s Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards (APSEA) winners for 2021 (click here to see the full list of winners). The industry awards included Aerometrex and Tonkin taking out two award apiece along with GP One Consulting. In the individual categories, David Bruce implored passion as being the most important ingredient when accepting his Educational Development Award, while Amelie Jeanneau and Gemma Swanson, both of University of Adelaide, won the Postgraduate and Undergraduate Student Awards respectively. Local SSSI committee member Jennifer Brindle received one of the biggest cheers of the evening as she accepted her Future Leader of the Year award, before Mark Deuter of Aerometrex was announced as the deserving recipient of the South Australian Professional of the Year Award.

After the uncertainty of the past few years, it was fantastic to see the surveying and spatial sciences industry again coming together to celebrate everything that makes it such a rewarding industry to be a part of. A special thanks must be extended to the SSSI national staff and SA volunteers (who donate a significant amount of their time) for pulling together and putting on an event that lived up to its reputation as Australia’s premier surveying and spatial sciences conference. Bring on SID2022!
