GDA2020 Update
Thanks to Aerometrex and representative Julia Spark who sponsored the recent workshop held in conjunction with crazy camels! It was great to have Joel Haasdyk, Spatial Services GDA2020 'Guru' speak on the changes that GDA2020 is bringing, along with Tom Bernstein who also provided insight into data & datum systemic integration.

The Spatial Services presentation summary is available here.

Additionally, Steven Garlinge, Managing Director at GEODATA KODA Australia, gave an in-depth presentation on data perspectives utilised in Real-Time Positioning for Underground Construction Robots. The Workshop was rounded out with a Q&A Panel of Joel, Tom, Steven and NSW YP of the Year Nikolaas Kostraby – who also shared his data-driven journey with us –plus the launch of the APSEAs for 2019. Thanks to all our panellists for knowledge sharing! Thanks too to BigDataEarth and Keping Chen for engaging in the spirit of the event, which enabled a number of Young Professionals to attend. And an honourable mention goes to BigDataEarth (the camel) who was a valiant 2nd as shown below along with the presentation ceremony camel style!

While 'Aero' – who as the Aerometrex camel – was a little behind in the Aerometrex Camel Racing Cup, Julia was able to present the Cup to first-time cameleer, Shannon, who enthusiastically guided 'Stumpy' to victory!
More photos from the event will be available via a special sharing link shortly!! If you would like this link sent directly to you email: rom.nsw@sssi.org.au with 'GDA2020 Link Request' in the subject line.

Member MOMENTS

5 minutes with ... jUSTIN kELL

Please give us an idea of your professional background.
I completed a Diploma in Surveying at Wollongong TAFE in 1994 and Bachelor of Surveying at Newcastle University in 1998. I was registered as a Surveyor in NSW in 2001. I was ISNSW Committee member 2006 – 2011 and SSSI ACT Committee member 2014 – 2018
Tell us what is the most enlightening project that you are or have been involved in?
The Woodlawn Bioreactor near Tarago I’ve been involved with since its inception in 1999. It’s a waste treatment facility with diverse and innovative recycling and power generation. In 2009 I was awarded the Sir Thomas Mitchell award for excellence in surveying for my involvement over that 10 year period. Currently I’m managing a 140 lot residential subdivision on land owned by the Catholic Church with a former girls' orphanage as its centrepiece. So that’s been fairly enlightening too.
What is the best thing you’ve experienced since becoming a GIS professional?
Rural land development creates opportunities to rehabilitate land that otherwise would not occur. It provides financial resources to do things that otherwise can’t be afforded. It’s also satisfying creating the opportunities and growth that community and developers enjoy from land development. [SSSI looks forward to seeing this first hand when we embrace Justin's hospitality at NSW ACT Conference in Goulburn 25–27September].
What are you most looking forward to being a part of in the next six months?
Of course the NSW ACT Conference 2019 in Goulburn in September. This is in my backyard and Goulburn has this great opportunity to show participants what we have to offer and what we’re achieving.
Okay, as a local, give us your tips for the best coffee and dining out in your area.
Mmmm, being diplomatic I’d recommend a few; we’re spoilt for choice. Greengrocer Café, The Harvest, Roses Café and Park Café
Finally, with SSSI being a national organisation, what is your favourite holiday destination?
Any Bush Heritage Australia property.
Thanks Justin and see you along with LandTeam colleagues in Goulburn in September!
