Women In Spatial is Off and Racing in NSW having been launched on February 22nd.

Thanks to our valued sponsors - Digital Globe with Peter Kinne making the trip from Queensland to join us and inspire us with his address - Aerometrex whose Julia Spark gave insightful comments as part of the breakout sessions on the future of WIS, Snowy Hydro whose Raelene Forbes was the facilitator for the event; congratulations to Raelene on becoming the NSW representative on the National Women In Spatial Committee and Cardno who had a great team of good sports led by Liz Fulton.

Mary-Ellen Feeney, returned from Homeward Bound, spoke on Leadership in STEM.

There was a lively panel session with Wanda Skerrett, Charity Mundava and Rohan Bakker each of whom we sincerely thank for taking the time to attend and share their perspectives with us and we were grateful Rohan made his final boarding call back to Melbourne!

Icings on the cake included the fabulous operaretic voice of Donna Cain, a tiered champagne pour, the eclectic Dr Brainoff and the WIS Race being won by the State's leading female reinswoman, which also helped to raise funds for Ovarian Cancer, congratulations again to Amanda and connections plus all involved!!

Thanks to all attendees - a small group of whom are pictured above - who made the later afternoon and evening such a success.

We will be back in contact re the WIS platform and the next event likely in June.

Please give us an idea of your studies background

I am a third year currently studying a dual degree of Bachelor of Environmental Management (Geography major) and Bachelor of Arts (Politics and International Relations major, Environmental Humanities minor).

Tell us what is the most enlightening project that you are or have been involved in?

The most enlightening protect I have been involved in has been a Student Editor for Lost on Campus at UNSW in 2018. This role was enlightening for me as I could see the data I imputed and the photos I took becoming interactive. I see it as a nice legacy of mine, having many students and staff utilising the photos I have taken on a daily basis to find their rooms and places on campus.

What is the best thing you’ve experienced since starting your studies?

The best thing I have experienced since starting my studies was bushbashing and mapping out data in Smiths Lake for GIS. It was quite eye opening for me seeing the recorded data interpreted onto a map the next day.

What are you most looking forward to being a part of in the next six months?

I am looking forward to the opportunities available for me and being able to contribute to SSSI as a Student Representative.

Okay, as a local give us your tips for the best coffee and dining out in your area.

As someone who does not drink coffee, unfortunately I do not have any recommendations. However for dining, I would recommend 678 KBBQ on Pitt Street in Haymarket as they have the best selection of wagyu beef at an affordable price.

Finally, with SSSI being a national organisation, what is your favourite holiday destination?

My favourite holiday destination is in Vietnam. I loved the country as a whole as it was unique from North to South and the atmosphere was more relaxed. Whilst I was in South Vietnam, I enjoyed the sense of community that was around and how days felt much longer, with more opportunity for me to do things than in Sydney.

Anna, pictured at left, at the recent WIS Off and Racing event, is the new Student Representative on the NSW Regional Committee - congratulations!

2019 Mentoring Programme

SSSI National YPs Mentoring Program 2019 - seeking Expressions of Interest!

Last year, the 2018 Mentoring Program went off with a bang - mentors and mentees from all over Australia (and a few overseas!) reported that they found so much value from being involved. In 2019, the National Young Professionals Mentoring Program is back, seeking Expressions of Interest from mentors and mentees across Australia and internationally! The 2019 program will run from July to October and involve fortnightly meetings for mentors and mentees, face to face or by distance (over the phone or using Skype, Zoom, and so forth).

This year’s program will extend the opportunity for mentees to be in their final year of study OR recently graduated and working as a young professional in the field. We welcome mentors from all ages and walks of life who are familiar with the spatial and surveying industry and would like to inspire and pass on their experiences to the people who will shape the future of our industry.

Please submit your EOI now at: If you don’t receive a confirmation email, please send a quick email to to make sure that your EOI has come through.

Mentoring and coaching and valuable experiences - if you know anyone in your networks or friends/family, please pass on the details of this program for them to consider.
