SSSI – URISA EXCHANGE PROGRAM
SSSI Spatial Information & Cartography Commission has an international exchange arrangement with Urban and Regional Information Systems Association. The relationship has its origins in the Australian counterpart AURISA which rolled into SSI and subsequently SSSI under the stewardship of the SI&C Commission.
URISA is a multi-disciplinary geospatial organization that provides professional education and training, a vibrant and connected community, advocacy for geospatial challenges and issues, and essential resources. URISA fosters excellence in GIS and engages geospatial professionals throughout their careers.
SICC has drawn greatly on URISA resources for:
There has also been a reciprocally funded annual exchange program between the URISA President and the SIC Commission Chair with Master classes facilitated in conjunction with available Conference opportunities.
URISA MASTERCLASS OPPORTUNITIES
URISA has a selection of training workshops that are delivered under licence by its accredited trainers. Participants can register for the workshops and in addition apply to become a trainer.
As a benefit of the SSSI URISA Exchange Program qualified professionals can enrol in the workshops in a “train the trainer” capacity, whereby they gain accreditation to deliver further workshops using URISA licensed course material under the SSSi CPD umbrella.

A representative of the SICC Committee participates in the SSSI Education & Career Development Committee who have the three initiatives all at various stages of progress:
1. A National Surveying and Spatial Competition. So far restricted to QLD and ACT. Expected to grow nationally over time.
2. Facilitating the creation of an interest group and from that a leadership group to drive forward the 2026 Action Plan - Education Pillar. Many people have expressed interest and so a leadership group workshop is being planned to define the goals, group structure, set milestones and timelines.
3. Provide a more effective forum for education stakeholders to communicate and collaborate with each other.
