SSSI SICC News – July 2019

June 30, 2019
Chair Report – Kerry Smyth FSSSI, GISP-AP

July is the mid-year milestone – many head off overseas for holidays, research and new opportunities, while others remain in Australia to get stuck into business and big work projects. Whatever your plans, make sure you tick over your SSSI membership, and consider nominations for the forthcoming Spatial Excellence Awards in your region.

SICC Upcoming Elections

Nominations for the 2019–2021 commission representatives will open next month, with two positions for each region. I encourage you to give serious consideration to stepping up as a SICC national representative. Professional volunteers are the lifeblood of SSSI; your time and skills can make a difference to the national agenda for this industry.  Don’t underestimate the benefits to your long-term career that a national and international profile generates.

Strategic Road Map & Member Survey

Both these initiatives have given us plenty to work with, and Year 1 projects have set the springboard for the coming financial year. I expect the Year 2 action projects will shape up to move SSSI and its Commissions and Regions towards new ground by targeting the most relevant services for its members.

Geographic Information System Professional – Asia Pacific (GISP-AP)

Did you know that over 140 individuals have attained GISP-AP Certification since its introduction in 2007? Some have retired and adopted Emeritus status, many have renewed (like me preparing a second 5-year renewal), and others have dropped the baton. One thing is certain – there are still professionals who value the edge that GISP-AP provides in the job stakes. So, get cracking, dust off your creds and make the effort to polish up your post-noms.

The SICC team and certification panel have been on a campaign to revamp the process, adopt the Body of Knowledge Mark2, and promote certification to employers. This means more work for the wicked (volunteers), so to gauge the likely return benefit, we need prospective GISP-AP candidates to express interest. We propose to contact all on register for feedback, so please update your contact details.

If you have any issues you want to bring to the National Agenda, please contact me.
