National SICC Chair - Kerry Smyth GISP-AP
Exciting months ahead with the upcoming round of Conferences and Awards in the regions. I encourage you to watch for the calls for papers and sponsorship opportunities. Professional profile and career development are enhanced by your participation in these outreach events.
Already taking shape and attracting interest from our members and wider industry groups are:
Congratulations to Nicholas Flett (MSSSI) as the recipient of the SSSIWA Travel Grant. Nicholas will use the travel grant to attend the URISA GIS Leadership Academy in Salt Lake City, July 23-27. The Academy is the only leadership program of its type and features speakers and facilitators from diverse GIS and IT departments across multiple companies and government.
I encourage you to participate in the grass work activities of our Commission so that we can further support these types of opportunities in the future.
If you would like to contribute in any way please contact me personally. Chair.sicc@sssi.org.au

summary of committee meeting
National Spatial Information and Cartography Committee Meeting - 31st May
Review of MOU with URISA
SI&C Commission (SICC) has a Memorandum of Understanding with URISA. SICC annually funds a license to use the content of various masterclasses. This content is used to run workshops around Australia for both members and non-members of SSSI.
There is also a reciprocally funded annual exchange program where a nominated SICC member visits the USA, attending the URISA conference and sharing knowledge. This year, SICC sponsored Tripp Corbin from the USA to attend Locate 2018 and he presented 2 Asset Management masterclass while in Australia. This arrangement has been in place for some time and the Committee invites debate over whether the above arrangements offer good value to the overall aims of the SI&C Commission.
Committee Membership
There are now quite a few vacancies on the National SI&C Committee. This affects our ability to contribute new ideas and action them. The Regions will be contacted and an email will be sent to all SI&C Commission members to invite interested members to join. The Committee noted that members need not be currently on a regional committee.
Education
The National SSSI Committee on Education have been working on a developing some initiatives that align with the 2026 Agenda. A paper on this has been submitted to the SSSI board for review. The SI&C Committee noted that there would be benefit to have some involvement with the Education Commission and their work. The Committee will endeavour to set up this connection.
Other happenings in the education space were highlighted during the meeting. Namely:
-
The launch of a new Geo Spatial Science Website and Video which has come about by the efforts of Destination Spatial Queensland. These materials have been designed to engage and educate secondary students about the breadth of opportunities available in geospatial science. See: Launch of Geo Spatial Science Website and Video
-
Geospatial science teaching modules were developed called Spatial Connect organised by Geography Teachers Association of Victoria (GTAV) in conjunction with Federation University. These are also available to Geography Teachers Associations in other States. Contact your State’s Geography Teachers Association to tell them about it. See: https://www.cerdi.edu.au/spatialconnect
Annual Magazine
An annual Magazine (yet to have a name) about the SI&C Commission and it’s activities is being drafted. The format will be PDF for reading online as well as printed for sending to new members and for promoting SSSI at events. The final product is aimed for completion later in 2018. The magazine will also promote the SSSI sustaining partners.
SSSI Website
The need was highlighted that information on past events should be accessible from the SSSI website. Important in particular to members who are tallying up their CPD points as well as for providing information on a member’s contribution to the industry when nominating them for an award. This will be reported back to the SSSI operations.
FOSS4G Conference in Melbourne
SSSI are involved with the international conference for Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) in Melbourne being held 20-23 November. This event showcases the technologies, standards, case studies and geospatial trends up-heaving today's IT industry. Discussion occurred around the opportunity to get more involved with this event and take opportunity to attract membership of our institute. One idea for this is to place our annual magazine into the delegate satchels. (if they are ready in time)
SI&C Operational Plan
The review of the SI&C operational plan will be put on hold until the completion of the overall strategic plan of SSSI is released.
Next Meeting : 21st June 2018
