Locate 2020 Meetup of SICC Members

SSSI members of the Spatial Information and Cartography Commission are invited to a meetup at Locate 2020 which will be held during one of the breaks.  This will provide an opportunity to hear about the activities of the Commission, meet other members and to contribute ideas.

Our visiting URISA Exchange Delegate,  Immediate Past President of URISA, Kim McDonough, GISP will be participating also.  Kim works at the Tennessee Department of Transportation and is Chair of Leadership Development and Special Awards Committees of URISA.

SSSI Member Web map

The SICC Commission has published a web map of the SSSI membership by Suburbs across Australia.

This map may help in realising where membership is concentrated, where the membership gaps are and deciding where to hold seminars.

Event Highlights
NSW Digital Twin Launch

On the 24 February, the Minister for Customer Service, the Hon. Victor Dominello MP launched NSW’s Spatial Digital Twin at the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney).   The minister spoke passionately about what spatial data can bring to the state of NSW and how the collaboration between government, industry and everyone will benefit the state.

The NSW Spatial Digital Twin is upgrading the existing two-dimensional environment creating a digital real-world model of our cities and communities which will facilitate better planning, design and modelling for NSW’s future needs.

Wayne Patterson, Director Spatial Operations, Spatial Services NSW, provided a  demonstration of the platform and spoke of an ecosystem of data, platforms and government agreements that let us work across agencies, industries and the community.

Support for this event was overwhelming across all tiers of government, industry and from the people of NSW.

The launch was well represented by SSSI with President Dr. Zaffar Sadiq Mohamed-Ghouse  along with state and national representation in attendance.

President Dr. Zaffar Sadiq Mohamed-Ghouse  , Mary-Ellen Feeney, Roshni Sharma and  Robert Campbell

SSSI-SA GIS in Local Government Seminar

On Friday 21 February 2020 the City of Tea Tree Gully hosted the latest iteration of the SSSI-SA GIS in Local Government Seminar. South Australia is made up of 63 Local Government areas.  SSSI-SA organises an annual half day seminar hosted at a different Council each year.

South Australian Councils have a culture of sharing knowledge and experience around GIS and IT.

Presentations this year comprised of :

  • Experience from one Council’s GIS system replacement
  • Bushfire mitigation work – reporting and measuring tool (pilot project)
  • Open Data Sources and Government web maps (there are so many!)
  • Urban Heat Islands – How Councils and Community are and will be using this data
  • Asset Renewal Modelling – Amazing dashboard showing effects of different budget options
  • How different Councils apply GIS in Works Management Processes – results of survey
  • Short presentations from 3 sponsors.  (Esri Australia, Aerometrex and 1Spatial)

The range of presentations delivered demonstrates the diverse use of GIS across the many functions of a Council.  Of 78 registered delegates, approximately 45% were not from Councils! These included University lecturers, students, State Government, Surveying firms and other private sector organisations who all seem very interested in the many ways GIS is used within local government.

Thanks to event sponsors ESRI Australia, Aerometrex and 1Spatial for contributing to this successful and increasingly popular seminar.
