Leadership development -
Discussion took place regarding the potential for the Spatial Science and Cartography Commission to potentially offer opportunities for development in the area of leadership. This concept being taken from URISA in the USA who run a “Leadership Academy” designed around leadership in the geospatial industry. It was raised that this could provide support to those professionals that have moved beyond the ‘young professionals’ stage of their careers. Action arising was to work on a strategy for this.
Face to face meeting at Geosmart Asia Locate 2018
SSSI SICC members took the opportunity to catch up face to face over lunch at the recent conference. The invitation was extended to regional SIC committee membership as well as national SICC committee members. Tripp Corbin, the visiting exchange delegate from URISA talked about the current challenges and initiatives happening in the URISA in America. The structure of URISA in the US is quite different to Australia’s and so much larger, offering many opportunities but also a logistical challenge to manage.
SICC members were given the chance to voice any questions or concerns regarding SICC in general and GISP-AP, opening up further discussion. It was good to meet other committee members for the first time in person.

Event Highlights
Geosmart Asia Locate 2018 –
Locate Conferences combined with Geosmart Asia this year in April at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Geosmart Asia Locate 2018 offered a stellar line up of keynotes and a great variety of concurrent sessions. Presentations will be available for delegates to view in due course. Spatial source wrote a good review of the conference, focussing on the main hot topics and takeaways.
SSSI - URISA Asset Management Masterclass workshops –
20 people attended a 1 day pre-conference workshop at Geosmart Asia Locate 2018 presented by Tripp Corbin, the visiting URISA exchange delegate.
This masterclass workshop focussed on asset management: Why we manage assets, how to define requirements for managing assets, strategies, asset plans, and leading into the geospatial tools for capturing and monitoring assets. Tripp spoke from many years of experience in this field, providing a highly engaging and valuable learning experience for delegates. We thank Tripp for his time and expertise
Asia Pacific Spatial Excellence Award winners –
The annual industry awards dinner held as part of this year’s conference was very successful, with Ally Clark from the ABC as MC, and many nervous moments as nominees were all read out.
The successful winners for 2018 can be viewed here.
