Committee Meeting Report
October Committee Meeting
Welcome to the new National Committee

The new National Committee for SICC (2019-2021) had its first meeting and elected office bearers.

SSSI endeavours to have 2 members from each State but for the last while has been operating with substantially less members that that.

With new members, brings new ideas and energy and we look forward to working together to bring value to the SICC membership nationally.

Broadly speaking, this committee concentrates on certification matters, communications and marketing, continuing professional development initiatives, advocacy and relationships with other related industry organisations.

Please get in contact if you are interested in being on this group.  It plays an important role in influencing the future direction of SSSI for SICC members.

The new Committee:

Chair - Angus Scown -QLD

Angus Scown is a spatial scientist from Queensland.  He works in a team to create spatially enabled software for a private company.  Angus loves how technology continues to create innovation opportunities for spatial scientists through academia, public sector and commercialisation.

Important News
URISA Exchange to GIS Pro URISA Conference

The SSSI Spatial Information & Cartography Commission has an international exchange arrangement with Urban and Regional Information Systems Association.  Kerry Smyth from WA represented SSSI as an invited delegate to attend the GIS-Pro 2019 Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA at the end of September.  While at the conference, Kerry met with executives of both URISA as well as executives of the GIS Certification Institute which is a separate body. Kerry was able to renew the relationships with these bodies and obtain agreement in principle to review existing arrangements and MOU’s we have in place. The result was very positive and Kerry will share these through other SSSI media channels.

Event Highlights
Spatial Information Day 2019

Spatial Information Day is South Australia’s premiere industry event.  Sure we have other events through the year, but this is the biggest by far and everyone comes to this one, held at the Convention Centre on 25th September.

Over 400 delegates, including some from interstate attended to see 46 presenters arranged across 5 streams.  This event attracted a record number of sponsors too.

The program offered themes from Surveying, Smart Cities, Artificial intelligence, Professional Development, 3D modelling and more.  This does make it hard to choose sessions so I hope to view the slide presentations later on !

Happy hour flowed into the Regional Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards dinner, where we recognised and celebrated this year’s industry and individual awards.
