Spatial Group for GovHack this weekend!

7-9 September across Australia
There's a great opportunity coming up to spend the weekend hacking away on a project and meet new people - this is what GovHack is all about. Govhack does not specifically focus on spatial and surveying, but rather the innovative use of Open Data. It is a free fun and relaxed open data competition run on the weekend of 7-9 September across Australia, and in 46 hours teams create a project page, proof of concept and a video that tells the story of how government data can be reused.

The event is not sponsored or run by SSSI. This, however, does not stop us from getting involved and joining the fun. Some SSSI YP members will be registering to attend the hackathon and would be interested to know if anyone else is keen too. If you are interested to attend, let us know so we can all meet up and compete as a team. There will be limited spots and may be best to have around 4-7 people per team (we can always have multiple teams if lots of people are interested). You don't need to be a SSSI member or YP to attend or to join the "spatial" team :)

Check out the GovHack website to register for the event. Once you've registered there, please let us know via this quick registration form so that we can let you know the details of other SSSI members who are taking part in GovHack. We look forward to seeing you there!

Launch of the SSSI National Young Professionals Career Development Webinar Series

The first in this Career Development Webinar Series will be held on Wednesday 26 September from 12.30pm – 1.30pm AEST and will be available nationally titled:

'Build Your Influence'
To succeed today you have to stand out. Being good at what you do no longer cuts it. You have to build your INFLUENCE. Whether you work for an organisation or yourself, it’s up to YOU to create the professional brand, thinking and content you need to attract business, customers and followers. Developing this new capability is critical for all SSSI professionals. Problem is, it doesn’t just happen.

In this webinar Influence Expert Mark Hodgson will share what you need to DO, BE and BUILD to go turn your expertise into the Influence you need to drive your career.  In a fast-moving and challenging 45-minute presentation Mark will cover

  • How to get started

The second event in the series will be on: Wednesday, 24th October, 2018 from 12.30pm to 1.30pm titled:

'Leveraging your network - making great first impressions and building your personal brand'
Whether it's becoming more charismatic at cocktail parties, meeting clients you've worked for previously and continuing to make a good impression or building your networks at a conference or event, knowing how to consciously leverage your networks is a powerful skill in today's world. This session will focus on personal branding and how to promote yourself within your network (both existing and potential), as having the confidence to connect with people when first meeting them is vital for your personal and professional success. The next step is managing those relationships to ensure they are sustained and mutually beneficial.

In this webinar, experienced and renowned speaker Julia Palmer will help you to better understand:
  • Learn the three stages to building profitable business relationships
  • Become comfortable and even charismatic when starting and leaving conversations
  • Know the difference between building a simple or strategic network
  • Manage visibility and reap the rewards of influential networking

SSSI Strategic Roadmap - what does it mean for YPs in the industry?

SSSI Strategic Roadmap - what does it mean for Young Professionals in the industry?
As you have no doubt heard, SSSI has put a lot of thought, time and effort into creating an ambitious, creative and exciting strategic roadmap, which can be found here and were recently explained in two webinars, No 1 (Tuesday 4 September, 12 to 1pm AEST) and No 2 (Thursday 6 September, 5 to 6:30pm AEST), which you can catch up on if you missed. These were informative and thought-provoking sessions, run by our President Gaby van Wyk and CEO Peter Olah, and highlighted the SSSI Strategic Projects Plan 2018-19 which is the biggest change program in SSSI history. It’s an ambitious plan. By 2021, it will position SSSI as one of the best professional membership organisations in Australia.

For young professionals, this strategic roadmap is very exciting news - the future of the industry lies with you, and SSSI will be focussing time, energy and funds on initiatives, programs and events from local, regional and national scales to supporting young professionals in their career development. This strengthens our industry, bringing together the wealth of skills, knowledge and experience we share and helping us to support each other. If you have ideas of what you'd like to see SSSI doing in this space of supporting young professionals and students, please let us know - we'd very much welcome your thoughts, ideas and feedback.
