SSSI YP News – February 2020

January 31, 2020 | Young Professionals
Chair Report – Roshni Sharma

It’s been a shocking start to 2020 with the bushfires wreaking havoc on communities and the environment, especially across the east coast but also in many parts of Australia, and more recently the Coronavirus has been making waves.

The SSSI Young Professionals are looking to make some good things happen this year, with the Mentoring Program starting in a few months, a monthly career development webinar, initiatives to engage with students more effectively and a suite of exciting sessions over the two day Young Professionals program at Locate20 in Brisbane in April. This is off the back of an incredible last year - a fantastic result with over 200 graduates from the 2019 SSSI Mentoring Program, over 1,000 participants at the 2019 monthly career development webinar series, a great turnout at the SEASC19 and Locate19 Young Professionals initiatives at these conferences, and two White Papers published from these.  So stay tuned in this space through 2020!

The committee is always open to submissions from the community on things that we could do better, feedback on past events, ideas for new events, or anything that might make the YPs better than ever. Please send an email to chair.yp@sssi.org.au.

Upcoming Events

SSSI joins the rest of the global community in mourning the loss of lives, livelihoods and communities during the recent catastrophic bush fires. We are hosting a National Bushfire Recovery Map-a-thon to assist efforts and registrations are now open.

Please note - no special skills are required to take part in the Map-a-thon - just a willingness to help the disaster recovery efforts and a computer. We’ll provide you with all of the how-to’s, as well as support along the way. Visit our website for more information.

Locate20

The Locate20 Conference is taking place on 28 - 30 April in Brisbane.

Along with the general program for the event, which has some amazing speakers and sessions, we have put together a special program target towards the young professionals in the industry.

Registration is now open and earlybird closes in a few days, so get in quick!  Hope to see you there.

Event Highlights
Webinar: Fisherman's Bend Digital Twin

Dr Davood Shojaei presented the first YP webinar for the year on the Fisherman's Bend Digital Twin. Over 40 participants registered to hear Dr Shojaei describe this innovative project and learn more about digital twins.

If you missed it, you can still purchase the recording via the ECPD page on the SSSI website.

Locate20 Travel Grant competition

See here for more details and to apply before Friday 13 March 2020!

Geospatial and surveying young professionals often possess great technical aptitude but take time to develop and understanding of some of the intangible skills that lead to business success - the power of networks, the value of continuing professional development to benefit their business, and personal branding to become ambassadors for their workplace.

Attending national conferences such as SSSI’s Locate20 can be a life-changing experience for young professionals, helping them to better understand the industry they are entering, to find out about cutting edge research and technology, and to meet industry leaders. However, the cost of registration, travel and accommodation prohibits many from attending. Workplaces often prefer to fund more experienced professionals to attend.

Large professional development events like Locate are an opportunity for young professionals to be inspired by the industry they are joining and to become more engaged with it, building their leadership capabilities.

SSSI, championed by our Young Professionals Group, is hoping to support five young professionals to attend Locate20 in Brisbane on 28 - 30 April 2020.
