Chair Report – Roshni Sharma
How the world has changed since our last GeoMessage! The sheer impact of COVID-19 on the ways in which we all live and work have been and continue to be immense and varied. Many of us have needed to change the way we work, be it working from home, reducing hours or not knowing what things will be like in a few months time. For those who have recently graduated, finding work can be challenging at the moment as well. Nevertheless, it’s incredible to see our spatial and surveying community banding together to produce a range of creative new ways of doing professional development and keeping connection as a community in these times, which is heartening.
For us, SSSI Young Professionals are very excited for the Mentoring Program 2020 - a fully online program that we hope will offer a space for meaning and learning amidst these times, helping intergenerational exchange of knowledge, experience and inspiration and helping keep spirits up.
The committee is always open to submissions from the community on things that we could do better, feedback on past events, ideas for new events, or anything that might make the YPs better than ever. Please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
SSSI is continuing its industry-leading Mentoring Program in 2020 - entirely online! With many disruptions to the ways in which we all live and work, sharing our knowledge and experiences about our profession across generations is more important now than ever. The program will run from June to November, where mentors and mentees meet to discuss given topics on a fortnightly basis, exploring a range of topics from career goal setting, leadership and emotional intelligence, networking, and more. Mentors and mentees can be expected to devote 8 hrs of their time over the length of the program for meetings and preparation for meetings.
The program runs in two streams: (a) undergraduate, for current students or recent graduates, and (b) graduate, for young professionals who are in the workforce and looking to step up their careers. We are urgently seeking mentors, as we have had a significant interest from mentees from around the country and would love to find ways to support them.

Locate20 new dates and digital program announced
Locate21 will take place in Brisbane from 30 March – 1 April 2021. In spite of our collective disappointment that this year’s conference will not be going ahead we know it will be back bigger and better in 2021.
The organising committee also been working on a digital engagement plan from Locate20, some of which will qualify for CPD points (professional development). The program will showcase an ongoing stream of digital materials generated from our 2020 speakers, panel sessions and exhibitors in the leadup to Locate21 in various formats such as live webinars, live interviews and Q&A and exhibitor demonstrations. These materials will be made available to existing conference registrants for free, and at a fee for those who are not yet registered.
For those delegates who have registered for Locate20, we strongly encourage you to hold over your registration until 2021. Your support of the conference is vital to securing the future of this valuable industry event.
Locate20 Travel Grant update
All submissions made for the Locate20 Travel Grant will be rolled over to the Locate21 program in Brisbane in 2021 to offer the best value to applicants. We’ll have more information on this towards the end of the year!
