SSSI YP News – May 2020

April 30, 2020 | Young Professionals
Chair Report – Roshni Sharma

As COVID-19 continues to reshape the ways that we all live and work, many of us are finding new ways of thinking. We are adapting to working from home, we are evolving our learning and retraining or seeking new professional development to boost our careers, and some of us are looking for new opportunities or trying different things as we move forward.

For many of us, we are beginning to realise that the world as we knew it won’t be coming back, however this presents a unique opportunity to reshape the future to be better. Whether this is exploring the opportunities for technological development that the coronavirus has created through disruption, exploring the paradigm shifts in how we manage people and teams, or the ways in which the landscape of professional development has shifted - we are all adapting and finding ways to move forward courageously.

In this month’s Geomessage, you’ll find a number of opportunities to help you take part in industry networking and professional development through virtual platforms as we pivot around COVID-19 - the mentoring program, a suite of online resources for professional development, spatial podcasts, and more

The committee is always open to submissions from the community on things that we could do better, feedback on past events, ideas for new events, or anything that might make the YPs better than ever. Please send an email to chair.yp@sssi.org.au.

Mentoring Program

SSSI is continuing its industry-leading Mentoring Program in 2020 - entirely online! With many disruptions to the ways in which we all live and work, sharing our knowledge and experiences about our profession across generations is more important now than ever. The program will run from June to November, where mentors and mentees meet to discuss given topics on a fortnightly basis, exploring a range of topics from career goal setting, leadership and emotional intelligence, networking, and more. Mentors and mentees can be expected to devote 8 hrs of their time over the length of the program for meetings and preparation for meetings.

The program runs in two streams: (a) undergraduate, for current students or recent graduates, and (b) graduate, for young professionals who are in the workforce and looking to step up their careers. We are urgently seeking mentors, as we have had a significant interest from mentees from around the country and would love to find ways to support them.
