Chair's message

Hi everyone, my name is Inga Playle and I am the new Chair for the SSSI Regional TAS Committee.  I am very excited to take on this role and work with the amazing SSSI Tasmanian Regional Committee and SSSI staff on local events and matters that are relevant to our SSSI members.

2020 was certainly quite the year. I hope that through all the challenges of this year that you have been able to find something positive to come of it.

For me, 2020 was a year of learning. With travel no longer possible, it brought many new opportunities to take part in international conferences, national and local webinar and seminars all from the comfort of our own homes. I covered a huge range of topics in these online events, many of which I would not have been able to attend if not for Covid-19. I learnt that our brains can change and learn new skills right into old age (neuroplasticity) and I now know that if we are not continually learning and developing, we can get left behind in our careers.

The SSSI Tas committee have delivered some great local events this year, including the State of the GIS online webinar in July and The Tasmanian Survey and Spatial eConference in November. I thank all of those involved in organising these events, which both received great feedback.

Having said all of that, perhaps some of us are now feeling a bit of webinar fatigue. The plan is (covid permitting) to have some face-to-face SSSI events in 2021, alongside with some events in webinar format. I am sure we would all enjoy being able to network in person again. To kick off the year, we will be celebrating our APSEA award winners in February – more details to come soon.

Finally, I want to thank Paul Digney for excellent work as the Tasmanian SSSI Regional Committee Chair for the past 2 years, and a big congratulations to Paul for his new role as President of the SSSI Board. I’m sure you’ll agree Paul will do a fantastic job.

I wish you all a very happy and safe holiday season. Please look after yourselves and those around you and enjoy a well-earned break.

Inga Playle
Chair, SSSI Tasmanian Region
