Victorian Region News - July 2020

June 29, 2020

Please find below information on what is happening at the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute Victoria as of July 2020.

Chair Report

Victoria Regional Chair - Andrej Mocicka

The SSSI VIC committee has been continuing to meet on a monthly basis via Zoom meetings and continues to work on providing members with opportunities to continue learning and developing through the nationally coordinated webinar program.

This program has presented opportunities for members to be involved in a multitude of disciplines within the Surveying and Spatial industry, where members are able to join in to a short one hour session on topics ranging from Georeferencing techniques in drone-based photogrammetry and laser scanning to e-Lodgement of survey plans and documents in QLD to Facial tracking – assisting speech language pathologists and all are totally FREE to SSSI Members.

We would encourage you to look at the SSSI Events Calendar and register your place.

Recently the Victorian Young Professionals group also ran their annual Victorian State Library Map Room tour virtually which was a success.

RMIT held their annual Poster Presentation this year and again due to the COVID-19 situation, the presentation was conducted virtually.  Members of SSSI Committee were involved in making comments and from a personal perspective, I would have to say that the standard of the posters and the topics covered were excellent.

Planning is in progress for the proposed face-to-face annual conference. This year, SSSI Victoria and SIBA are partnering with the Institute of Surveyors Victoria and the Consulting Surveyors Victoria to present the conference and the Awards of each organisation.

The conference Spatially Enabling Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will cover issues and solutions, business strategies, industry updates, policies, legislations, business and professional leadership relating to the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

While we work towards the much-anticipated face-to-face conference, should the pandemic circumstances restrict large gathering in Victoria, we would be ready to translate the conference and the Awards evening to a virtual platform.

We will be running an open form of SSSI VIC Committee meeting on Thursday 23 July and I encourage anyone interested to hear what we at the Victorian Committee are doing and plan to do, to attend. Come along to meet our SSSI President Zaffar Mohamed-Ghouse who will speak on SSSI Positioning for Future Trends, and SSSI CEO Tony Wheeler. We will welcome any questions, suggestions or comments at the meeting.

Kind regards,

Andrej Mocicka FSSSI
Chair, SSSI Victoria
