I would like to highlight the key offers presented in the recent members’ renewal letter signed by SSSI President, Zaffar Mohamed-Ghouse and SSSI CEO Tony Wheeler.
Firstly, the extensive webinars topics will be available to SSSI members free of charge from 1 July. You will see a few webinars in June already offered for free to members. Take up the opportunity to hear some great topics being presented by SSSI members and esteemed speakers secured to share their knowledge and insights with you. If you would like see the State of Victoria Map Room, join in the virtual tour on 30 June. If you are preparing for the large-scale data updates, do not miss the webinar on 16 July on “Overview of Vicmap and the Tsunami of data coming your way”.
The SSSI MemberOne Program is a new initiative provided to members. This is an incentive scheme for existing members to introduce new financial members to SSSI. The more financial members you refer, the greater discount (20% to 30%) you will receive to your SSSI membership fee. More details about the SSSI MemberOne Program will be sent to members in coming months, so look out for it.
The membership renewal letter has highlighted some of the work behind the scenes that you may not be aware of, such as the partnerships and collaboration with key national and international organisations, the new Disaster Management and Recovery special interest group, the ESP-AP certification, just to name a few. I hope you will continue to support the strategic goals and the direction SSSI is leading the profession towards.
The prestigious Oceanic APSEA Awards event was held on 28 May 2020 via an online platform this year. It was front row seating only and just as exciting to hear the announcements of the winners and the acknowledgement speeches by the award recipients.
Congratulations to all the winners of the awards, and a special acknowledgement to Victorian winners:
- Professional of the Year Award: Craig Sandy, Surveyor General Victoria
- Educational Development Award (Joint Winner): Professor Stephan Winter, University of Melbourne.
- Women’s Leadership Award (Highly Commended): Eva Rodriguez Rodriguez
- Undergraduate Student Award (Highly Commended): Andrew Campbell, RMIT University
I would also like to congratulate Associate Professor Chris Bellman, RMIT University and Professor Abbas Rajabifard, University of Melbourne on their Honorary Fellowships. Congratulations Chris and Abbas!
Nominations for the 2020 APSEA are open! More information about the APSEA award categories and how to submit an entry can be found on the SSSI website. Submit your nomination entries by Monday 31 August 2020.
Worth noting, SIBA/GITA ran a webinar on the Victorian Digital Cadastral Modernisation Program on Friday 12 June. Katherine Williams from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s DCM team presented the status of the project. For those interested in finding out more, please get in contact.
Lastly, make a note in your calendar of the Victoria Region Annual Summit, a proposed face-to-face conference on Friday 20 November on “Spatially Enabling SDGs”. If you have a topic you would like to share, get in touch with the Victoria Regional Committee via rom.vic@sssi.org.au
