Moving to an isolated work lifestyle I am sure has impacted many of us in the WA SSSI community and while COVID-19 continually interrupts day to day life the SSSI committee here in WA has worked hard with our counterparts across the nation to continue to provide opportunities for continued professional development. Now may be the best opportunity to learn a new skill, catch up on changes surrounding GDA2020, new technologies or published research. If you are like me you are also working out the best routine for home schooling and teaching the next generation about our wonderful profession. A number of webinars have been scheduled over the coming month which I invite you all to jump online and register for. These webinars provide a great opportunity to connect with your peers, learn and discuss matters that may be impacting the spatial sector.

In addition to the webinars, we are also looking at the WA SSSI conference and if it will still run in its current form sometime this year. While no date is yet confirmed we would be interested in hearing from you should you have suggestions, be willing to present a topic (either online or face to face in the future) so please do get in touch at Finally, we are interested in hearing from you, especially if your peers are doing exceptional work.

The APSEA awards will continue in 2020 and we want to ensure WA celebrates and recognises the innovative work we do here in this wonderful state. If you know of a person who continues to demonstrate excellence, think about nominating them for an award and start preparing a submission. More information on APSEA awards will be coming out shortly so watch this space.

SSSI 2020 YP Mentoring program now open

SSSI is continuing its industry-leading Mentoring Program in 2020 - entirely online! With many disruptions to the ways in which we all live and work, sharing our knowledge and experiences about our profession across generations is more important now than ever. The program will run from June to November, with where mentors and mentees meet to discuss given topics on a fortnightly basis, exploring a range of facets from career goal setting, leadership and emotional intelligence, networking, and more. Mentors and mentees can be expected to make approximately an eight hour time commitment over the length of the program for meetings and preparation for meetings.

The program runs in two streams: (a) undergraduate, for current students or recent graduates, and (b) graduate, for young professionals who are in the workforce and looking to step up their careers.

The feedback from previous participants has been so positive - we strongly encourage you to consider participating in this fantastic program. Read more on the YP Mentoring page on our website or click the links below to apply now!

Review of VET qualifications and associated units of competency in Surveying and Spatial Information Services

SSSI is also working with our members in providing feedback in response to the national project currently underway that is reviewing the vocational education and training (VET) qualifications and associated units of competency in Surveying and Spatial Information Services.

The initial consultants report released was of significant concern to industry as it recommended the deletion of Certificates II and III in Surveying and Spatial Information Services and the Advanced Diploma of Surveying.  The consultants have since rescinded this recommendation due to immediate industry feedback.

If you would like to provide feedback on the draft report, please click here for further information.

Major reform to WA strata law

Strata in WA is changing for the better with amendments to the Strata Titles Act 1985  to commence on 1 May 2020. The changes to WA strata law will modernise the State’s strata framework, making it clearer and fairer.

Those involved with strata properties and developments are encouraged to familiarise themselves with what’s changing and the associated timings. There are grace periods for some new requirements to ensure those affected have adequate time to meet them.
