INDIAN OCEAN RIM ENGAGEMENT WORKING GROUP

The SSSI WA invites you to nominate for a new Indian Ocean Rim Engagement Working Group

WA is uniquely placed in Australia to engage with major trading partners and developing nations in Southern Asia and the Indian Ocean rim.

The new working group will identify and advise the SSSI WA and its partners on opportunities for:

  • regional collaboration in surveying and spatial sciences, including innovative solutions developed in other jurisdictions with potential applications in Australia
  • WA contributions to capacity building across the region
  • regional and sub-regional cooperation to leverage public and private investment in STEM education and spatial infrastructures
  • research on the evolving geospatial ecosystem in the region, including how surveying and spatial capabilities can inform other STEM disciplines
  • education and outreach to groups at national and local levels
  • participation in conferences and events that connect communities of practice in surveying and spatial sciences and STEM
  • recognition and promotion of excellence in surveying and spatial sciences.

There is no set approach to how the working group will operate. That's something you'll be able to decide as a member.

If you have something to offer the SSSI in WA or would like further details, please email rom.wa@sssi.org.au. Please include your contact details and a brief on what you think you could contribute.

JULY EVENTS

The new financial year started with a very successful WA Mine Surveying Seminar held on 3 July which was co-hosted by SSSI WA and the WA Australian Institute of Mine Surveyors. Over 75 people attended and listened to a range of speakers who addressed four key areas:

  • Automation and the future
  • Control and monitoring
  • UAV advances
  • Technology showcase

Many thanks to our event sponsors:

SSSI WA was also proud to launch the 2019 WA Mentoring Program at our office welcome party held on 26July 2019. It was a very wet and wild evening, so we were very happy to welcome around 30 members and guests to hear more about the Mentoring Program and also take a tour of the new office space.

YP Chair, Roshni Sharma who is based in Sydney, joined us via video conference and further discussed the YP mentoring program and its benefits to mentors and mentees. 2018 YP Mentoring Program mentor, Nicholas Flett then shared his experience of being part of the program – both a rewarding and valuable experience. We were also fortunate to have a number of mentors and mentees in the audience.

After the presentation guests were invited to take a tour of the new office space and check out all the facilities. Members are welcome to email rom.wa@sssi.org.au to organise a visit and tour.

Special thanks to CR Kennedy who are the National Sponsors of the 2019 YP Mentoring Program.
