WA Regional Chair - Lesley Arnold
We are at the busy end of the year, with festive parties and Christmas shopping at the forefront of our minds.
At the same time, the SSSIWA Committee is busy planning the calendar of events for 2019. We meet on 12th December to put together a draft calendar and the final will be made available to members early in the New Year.
Hot topics for next year are virtual reality mapping, machine-learning and advanced BIG data analytics, smallsats, location apps, mobile sensor platforms, live data and real-time GIS, and of course the latest in drones so you can get some hands-on experience. You may want to add a ‘Drone’ to your Christmas wish list.
Please let Johanna Gastevich (firstname.lastname@example.org) know if there are any special topics or events you would like us to hold in 2019.
We capped off this year with a Map-a-thon, Cadastral Surveying Interest Group Meeting, Industry Golf Day, Fellows Annual Dinner and Curtin Spatial Sciences Colloquium.
A big thank you to the SSSIWA Committee and volunteers for making 2018 such a successful year. They are Damian Shepherd, Petra Helmholz, Kerry Smyth, Pat Burke, Paul Kennedy, Linda Skoog, Daniel Gunasekaran, Arfanara Najnin, Aaron Gibson, Tony Snow, David Belton, Danielle Stefani, Darren Mottolini, Linda Morgan, Peter Bowen, Kylie Armstrong, David Parnell, and our student volunteers who helped out for LIFE2018.
A big thank you to Johanna Gastevich for all her hard work and getting so much achieved in such a short space of time. Johanna has put us in a strong starting position for 2019, and for that I am truly grateful.
On behalf of the SSSI WA Committee and SSSI Office, I wish you and your families the very best this holiday season and throughout the coming year.
Have a safe and Merry Christmas!

LAND SURVEYING COMMISSION EVENT
The WA Land Surveying Commission held its final CPD event for 2018 on the 15th November - Look after future and current Surveyors.

Murray Dolling and Paul Asphar from Landgate discussed the Strata Titles Amendment and Community Titles Bills and also gave surveyors attending the opportunity to provide comment on what should be looked at with regards to the regulations for the Community Titles Bill.
This event will be available via ECPD in coming weeks.
The SSSI WA held its end of year Map-a-thon on Saturday, 1st December, 2018. This event was kindly sponsored by NGIS.
The focus of the event was to educate SSSI Members on how it is possible to use our mapping skills for a better cause and to do so in a fun, competitive environment. During the map-a-thon, mappers used OpenStreetMap to digitise features such as roads and infrastructure in countries which have not been mapped and are going through humanitarian crises.
The area of focus for our second map-a-thon was the southern part of India which is currently recovering from the destruction left by cyclone Gaja. The maps digitised by our mappers will be validated and used by NGOs to provide aid to the areas which are affected. As a whole, we were able to map 303 buildings and 268 km of roads! Our top 3 mappers were awarded prizes based on how many features they digitised. Prizes, lunch and venue were courtesy of NGIS Australia.
The official winners are:
1) Reagan Cope
2) Gabor Matuza
3) Christopher Pedler
