Chair Report

WA Regional Chair -  Dr Lesley Arnold

Welcome back!  I hope you had have had a great start to 2019.  It’s hard to believe we are already approaching February and Easter Eggs are already in stores.

The WA SSSI Committee has also got off to a quick start – with footy fever well and truly in the air.  We have two event lined up this year that take advantage of Perth Optus Stadium.  I am delighted to be able to invite you to participate in these events.

A big thank you to Johanna Gastevich (Regional Operations Manager) who has got the ball rolling for these events and thrilled to be working with such an enthusiastic committee.

The first is a CPD night for Land Surveyors.  Bernie Bernhardt Survey Manager on Optus Stadium, will take members on a tour of the Stadium from a surveyor’s perspective. Afterwards, networking will be held in the Coaches’ Room. Tickets to our site visits sell out fast – so please get in early to see the areas of Optus Stadium not open to the Public.

Footy fever continues at our annual Location Intelligence Forum and Exhibition 2019 (LIFE2019). Please save the date in your diaries for Wednesday, 4th September, 2019. We look forward to announcing our innovative program over coming months – an event not to be missed!

We also have a number of other exciting events planned for 2019 – our inaugural ‘SLIDE NIGHT’, a breakfast celebrating Women in Spatial, barefoot bowls, the industry golf day as well as a number of CPD events. Shortly we will be kicking off the YP Travel Grant Award… so stay tuned. This is going to be a busy year for SSSI WA and we welcome you support of these events.

This year we continue our focus on collaboration to bring you opportunities to extend your networks and professional involvement.  The first of our partnership events is the AIMS WA and SSSI WA Technology Day.  This annual event is always well attended – registration details are listed below.

I look forward to seeing you at these events throughout the year.

Regards

Lesley Arnold.

VISITING DELEGATION

In late December, SSSI WA was pleased to spend a morning hosting a number of visiting guests from University of Sciences – Hue University, Vietnam.

The purpose of the trip was to exchange information on fertilizing and soil classification including remote sensing approaches. The delegates were invited by Curtin University to explore future collaboration opportunities between both universities.

SEEKING A CADASTRAL SURVEYOR…

COLAB (Community Link to Architects & Builders) currently have a project looking for a Cadastral surveyor to help the charity Aboriginal Males Healing Centre.

Details:

Pilbara Domestic Violence Healing Centre – Aboriginal Male's Healing Centre, Newman WA

The Aboriginal Male’s Healing Centre Strong Spirit Strong Families Culture Inc (AMHC) is a charity based in the Pilbara helping aboriginal families with domestic violence. The centre offers an alternative to incarceration for perpetrators of violence. The centre aims to heal these men thus breaking the cycle of violence that has made this such an entrench problem. The AMHC will offer a holistic healing services incorporating both proven western methods (Duluth model) underpinned by Aboriginal Culture and Lore as a key healing element.

The project is a green field project. Council has leased the AMHC land in Newman. The facility will be self-sufficient for water and power. It will have a residential component and counselling. The feasibility study is just being completed the next steps that we require a project manager to support the management team as we move the project through detailed design, fund raising and approvals. Currently AHMC partners include ARUP, Hon Wayne Martin AC, Chief Justice of WA, BHP, and PD&M Architects just to mention a few.
