RECENT EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

UAV's and other UAV’s and other technological considerations Seminar

This sell-out Seminar reviewed all that has been happening in WA around UAV applications and technological developments over the past year or so.

Many thanks to our guest speakers who each provided great insight and discussion points:

  • Dr Simon Abbott, Location Intelligence - Imagery, Agriculture & Natural Resource Management, Landgate
  • Steve Brown, Managing Director, RemSense
  • Dr Stuart Gordon, Spatial Survey Lead, Aurecon

Thanks also to our gracious event hosts GHD.

Data Sharing and Privacy Seminar

The WA government is proposing whole-of-government Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Legislation and is trialing a new Information Classification Policy.  WA is one of only two states in Australia not to have legislation covering privacy and information sharing in the public sector.

Additionally, the Office of the National Data Commissioner is proposing new Data Sharing Legislation towards reforming the way public sector data is shared and used. The proposal will remove a fundamental element of privacy – consent, and instead place the responsibility on Data Custodians and Accredited Users to safely and respectfully share personal information where reasonably required for a legitimate objective.

This afternoon Seminar gave an overview of the proposed legislation and a panel discussion was held which highlighted industry concerns regarding the collection, use and storage of data.

Many thanks for Main Roads WA for supporting this event.

FIVE MINUTES WITH... ROSHNI SHarma

Get to know our YP National Chair and 2019 APSEA NSW Young Professional of the Year, Roshni Sharma!

1. Please give us an idea of your professional background
I'm a GIS Specialist for an environmental consultancy, Umwelt (Australia), based in the delicious Hunter Valley region of NSW.

2. What do you enjoy most about your job?
For me the most rewarding thing is being able to work on a variety of projects for a wide range of clients - it challenges me in good ways, keeps me growing and learning new things, and means that I have plenty of variety and chances to create tailored creative solutions so I don't get bored.

3. Who influenced you to get into the Spatial industry?
To be honest, I sort of fell into it after studying Environmental Science and Management, but I had some amazing lecturers - the most influential being A/Professor Shawn Laffan from UNSW, who got me thinking about the power of geospatial data and all of the things that can be achieved through seeing the world through this lens.

4. What is the best thing about being a GIS professional
The creative problem solving - thinking outside of the box to find new ways of doing things, and fitting things into a bigger global context that ties together multiple industries.

5. What are you most looking forward to being a part of in the next six months?
I'm excited to be working with the Locate20 Organising Committee to be working on ideas for Locate20 next year, as well as  the South Australian Spatial Information Day to speak about young professionals in the industry.

6. Most spatial industry people are travellers, so what is your favourite country to visit and why?
Fiji - not only because it is where my family come from, but it is a beautiful country that has so much potential in the geospatial sphere
