Young Professionals News – July 2020

June 28, 2020 | Young Professionals
Chair Report – Roshni Sharma

Many of us are now settling into the ‘new normal’, or at least the ‘new for now normal’, with COVID controlled on the whole but occasionally rearing its head in places. Some of us are back in the office, with social distancing and other health and safety measures implemented, and some of us are working from home for the forseeable future. Wherever we are, we’ve experienced one hell of a year so far, which has felt more like a decade than just over six months.

The end of financial year was a busy time for many, and there’s still a lot going on. As we move forward into the second half of the year – which is hopefully better than the first – don't forget to take time to remember your accomplishments and those of your peers, friends and family. Nominations are open for the 2020 Asia Pacific Spatial Excellence Award, so take a moment to nominate yourself or a colleague or peer who you think is doing a good job – you've got to have your hat in the ring to have a chance at winning!

We continue the work of the SSSI Young Professionals, both regionally and nationally, with the SSSI Mentoring Program, which is now in full swing and going well. We also have the details of our Career Lift: Tools for Emerging Leaders webinar series below, and with all SSSI webinars now free for members, we hope that they offer you some gems of wisdom!

The committee is always open to submissions from the community on things that we could do better, feedback on past events, ideas for new events, or anything that might make the YPs better than ever. Please send an email to chair.yp@sssi.org.au.

Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards
Nominate yourself or your peers now for the APSEA Young Professional of the Year Award – you've got to be in it to win it!

The Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards are the eminent award program for the Australian geospatial industry. They are a hallmark of celebrating our successes, as individuals and businesses, and offer recognition of excellence, initiative, dedication and future potential.

The Young Professional of the Year award is recognised in each region (all states and territories of Australia, as well as in New Zealand and the Pacific). Being awarded the Young Professional of the Year is an accolade that will add volumes to your resume and current and future job prospects.

The application process may seem daunting at first, but it’s simpler and shorter than you might think, and is definitely worth the effort. All current members of SSSI under 36 years old as at March 2021 are eligible for nomination. Nominate now!
